1 year ago today my sister captured our experience fighting the palisades fire in an attempt to save our family’s and neighbors’ homes.

This day a piece of me died forever. Watching our childhood neighborhood burn for 72 hours straight. Watching my dad and sister almost lose their lives to the flames in front of my face. The pure depletion. Yet none of us once wanted to give up. We all tried to take more shifts than we were supposed to because we loved each other so much. No help in sight. No power. No news. total darkness paired with the brightest orange sky you could imagine as flames and fireballs lit up the night. Relying on mental strength when our bodies wanted to give out. Shifting from the freezing temperatures in soaking wet clothes to blazing hot armageddon like conditions. No gear. Battle scars I will have on my body and in my mind forever. It felt like nothing we could do was enough yet we were determined to not give up. A lot of people question our decision to stay but it wasn’t even a thought that crossed my mind. I would do it a thousand times over again. These were the longest yet shortest three days of my life. We didn’t want to leave yet our bodies physically couldn’t anymore. It’s been an entire year and I still don’t think I’ve processed it, and we were the lucky ones. Sometimes I feel guilty we saved our home and that our side of the neighborhood was one of the few to survive. We risked our lives for the place and people we love the most. Our animals that we couldn’t get out. I love the palisades so much. It will forever be a piece of me. My heart goes out to everyone grieving the loss of the Palisades and Altadena; to those who lost their family members, homes, and animals. Thank you to the fire fighters who do this every day and gave us those slight glimmers of hope. To Melia, Chase, and my dad for being the strongest people I know. To my cousin who told me his firefighting stories from a young age that made me think we could make it (and taught me hot spots were a thing - the entire reason we are alive right now).
