Friends in New York, Adam HajYahia and Ruanne Abou-Rahme are leading a classroom session on Sunday, September 27th from 4 - 5 pm, titled 𝘞𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘥. Free for all with registration.  More below: This study session grapples with the contradictions, negotiations, and political commitments inherent in the practice of translation. We read texts that consider what it means to carry language and meaning across not only linguistic boundaries but also distinct cultures, struggles, and historical moments. Drawing on the multilingual publishing of Bilna’es, the session situates translation within a broader philosophical and political matrix: as an act of interpretation, mediation, and transmission that can preserve a text while also transforming it. Together, we ask what is gained, altered, rendered untranslatable, and what resists translation altogether when words move between contexts. How does translation negotiate the distance between the conditions in which a text was written and those in which it is read? What kinds of fidelity—to language, history, struggle, or the dead—does it demand? Translation is thus considered as a mode of reading and writing through which the past becomes available to the present, and through which inherited concepts and struggles might acquire new political life—sometimes against their interests. 🟪 To all those we are indebted to ‎إلى كلِّ الذين نحن مَدينون لهم publication available | Digital and print ‎نسخ متوفّرة | رقميّة ومطبوعة “To all those we are indebted to” brings together poetry, critical writing, image-making, drawing, and song in a multidisciplinary series that examines the politics of refusal in Palestine. Composed of four contributions assembled through paired collaboration, the contributors explore and develop novel ways of producing knowledge. Alia Al-Sabi and Amany Khalifa take apart Palestinian ‘return’ through a conversation that unfolds across literary, temporal, and spacial registers. Amr Amer and Laura al-Tibi weave together song and critical analysis, unsettling colonial conceptions of Palestinians’ relation to their land economically and existentially. Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme offer a comprehensive hypothesis of the “negative,” unfolding across poetry, images, and illustration. Adam HajYahia and Haitham Haddad formulate an aesthetic theory of revolt, examined through text, images, and illustration. By focusing on the interplay between text and artistic form, “To all those we are indebted to” proposes new methods of thinking and creating, aesthetically and politically. ‎”إلى كلِّ الذين نحن مَدينون لهم” هي سلسلة مكونة من أربع كتيّبات التي تطرح مناقشات بصريّة، شعريّة، ونقديّة لمفهوم سياسة “الرفض” في السياق الفلسطيني. تم إنتاج كل كتيّب من خلال تعاون ثنائي بين فنانين/ات وكتّاب لاستكشاف وتطوير طرق متجددة للرفض وإنتاج المعرفة عبر إيماءات تدمج ما بين التحليل السياسي والسرد الجماليّ. ‎عالية السبع وأماني خليفة تقومان بتفكيك “عودة” الفلسطينيّين من خلال محادثةٍ تتكشَّف عبر دفاتر الأدب، والزمان والمكان. عمرو عامر ولورا الطيبي ينسجان معاً الأغنية والتحليل النقدي، ليخلخلا المفاهيم الاستعماريّة لعلاقةِ الفلسطينيّين بأرضهم اقتصادياًّ ووجودياًّ. باسل عباس وروان أبو رحمة يقدّمان فرضيّةً شاملةً عن “الناقص”، الذي يتجلّى في الشعر، والصورة والشكل. آدم حاج يحيى وهيثم حداد يصيغان نظريّة جماليّة للثورة، يقومان ببحثِها من خلال النص، والصورة والشكل. من خلال التركيز على التفاعل بين النصِّ والشكل الفني، يقترحُ “إلى كلِّ الذين نحن مَدينون لهم” أساليبَ جديدة للتفكير والإبداع جمالياًّ وسياسياًّ. 🔗Link in bio ‎ ⛓الرابط في البايو taken in مكان مجهول by @bilnaes_

소리와 예술로 연결되는 독자적인 콜렉티브, Bilna’es 2020년 팔레스타인에서 시작된 예술 플랫폼이자 예술가 네트워크 빌나에스(@bilnaes_)는 음악을 중심으로 미술, 출판, 퍼포먼스, 전시, 리서치, 디지털 프로젝트를 넘나든다. 프로젝트마다 협업하는 인원이 달라지는 유동적인 컬렉티브인 빌나에스는 뮤지션 줄무드(Julmud)와 무카타(Muqata’a)를 중심으로 한 세 차례의 공연과 누화 컨템포러리에서 열리는 전시를 위해 지난 9월 초 처음 서울을 찾았다. ‘Bilna’es(بالناقص)’라는 이름은 아랍어로 ‘부족한 상태에서’, ‘마이너스에서’라는 뜻을 지닌다. 전통적인 컬렉티브의 틀을 거부하는 빌나에스에게 ‘자원의 재분배’는 중요한 원칙이다. 예술가가 작업을 지속하는 데 필요한 여러 조건을 함께 마련하고, 기존 문화예술계와 다른 생산 및 유통 방식을 만들어가는 것이다. 팔레스타인의 언더그라운드 문화와 실험음악 신을 주요 기반으로 삼는 동시에 빌나에스는 국제 현대미술·음악 네트워크와도 긴밀하게 연결돼 있다. For the final night, SoundSupply_Service brings together artists from different currents within Seoul’s electronic music scene. Live sets come from KIM XIMYA, bridging hip hop and the electronic avant-garde; Mount XLR, reshaping post-dubstep space and UK bass rhythms in his own language; and Digest, a duo formed by SoundSupply_Service founder Choi Jongbin and experimental hip hop artist Easymind. DJ sets from Winter Back and Paola Laf complete the night. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Sameer Project @thesameerproject to support displaced families in Gaza. Muqata’a is a co-founder of Bilna’es and a key figure in Palestinian underground hip hop. Blending traditional Arab folk samples with boom bap, trip hop and downtempo beats, he formed Ramallah Underground in 2002. His later work moved toward heavier, glitch-driven sound, including Inkanakuntu and Kamil Manqus, ranked No. 21 in The Wire’s Releases of the Year 2021. Sampling drones, military checkpoints and the sounds of occupied life, Muqata’a creates soundscapes that are both innovative and liberatory. Bilna’es is an adisciplinary platform exploring new models for artists to redistribute resources and support one another through the production and circulation of work. It commissions and publishes music, multimedia works, publications, performances and installations by artists and cultural workers in Palestine and internationally. Join us at Center for Art, Research and Alliances on Saturday, July 18 at 4pm for a listening session of Mountains of Poetry, a record by interdisciplinary artist Muyassar Kurdi, released by Bilna’es. 🫀 Rooted in voice, electronics, and improvisation, Mountains of Poetry reflects on memory, longing, displacement, and the relationship between body and land, tracing cycles of erosion and renewal. The listening session will be accompanied by projections of oil paintings created as graphic scores alongside the record. Developed in dialogue with the music, these works extend the record’s sonic landscape through image.
