Before the Scientific Revolution in the mid-1500s, a very different view of the natural world dominated Western Europe. People believed the boundary between the heavens and the Earth was fluid, with the stars directly influencing life on Earth. Astrology was not only used to forecast weather but also played a role in medical diagnosis and treatment. Astrologer-physicians would consider a patient’s zodiac sign, the positions of the moon or stars at a given moment, to recommend remedies for various illnesses and pains.

Drawing upon medieval diagrams which assigned zodiac signs to rule over specific parts of the body, artist Bridget Stehli’s ‘The Piscean’ depicts the artist adorned with an icon of the zodiac. Herself a pisces, the sign associated with the feet in celestial medicine, the artist’s bare toes stick out beneath two fishes. That the artist is particularly self conscious about her feet ‘The Piscean’ lends credence to the power of symbolic systems to shape self-perception and behaviour.

In a culture rife with ways to identify (a pisces, an introvert, extrovert, Type A or Type B, someone with anxious, avoidant, disorganised or secure attachments etc.) ‘The Piscean’ embraces self diagnosis as a tool that is at once clarifying and mystical, as grounded in reason as it is in myth.
