And just like that our world changed forever!

Julian David Binns was born in Busselton at 10pm on 2.12.24, after a long but beautiful day. Came out all guns blazing and hasn’t skipped a beat since.

Mum is amazing, Dad is hopeless, Julian is handling life like a champ. We can’t wait for our little king to meet all his new brothers and sisters and aunts and uncles around the world.

Wildly thrilled and absurdly in love. taken in Wadandi Boodja by @binnstagram

Still not sure that the weekend’s @rottoswim has sunk in just yet. A boatload of best mates cheering me across 20-kilometres of open ocean as one of my oldest pals paddled and coached and coaxed me to the line where Mum and Dad and Steph were waiting still seems more of a dream than something that actually happened.

With all that’s going on in the world the fact we can swim to an island on a sunny Saturday for fun, while our support crew scoff seafood on a beautiful vessel a few metres away, is the height of luxury and something I’ll never take for granted.

I read @hughvancuylenburg’s Resilience Project a few weeks ago and in its honour promised myself I wouldn't allow one negative thought for however long it took to cross the channel. Six-hours of gratitude-infused grit later I’d stuck to my vow and smiled and stayed strong, waiting to hit a wall that somehow never really came. I knew I’d done the training, I never doubted my resolve, and I’m so bloody proud to say I did it.

It takes a team, and without Stephy, my folks, everyone’s new favourite superhero Hamish, Webbo and James for offering up Just Right then skippering her to glory, plus the rest of the gang of legends onboard there’s no way this could ever have come together. Not to forget the Mighty Rostis and Paul at @swim_in_common either. A lot more than just swimming training went into Saturday and it’s safe to say it all poured out at the finish. I can see how people get addicted but that’s for another day, I’m happy to enjoy one of the best days of my life a little longer for now.

I’ve been raising money for @surfaid along the way. Thanks for all the donations so far, and if you were waiting to see if I made it, whatcha waiting for now?

Link in my bio for the full recount of the swim, and to contribute to the cause. Cheers. taken in Whadjuk Wadjemup by @binnstagram

Two weeks ago, after 32 years of loving the @freodockers, Julian and I came within a couple of minutes of seeing our club win its first flag. It wasn’t to be, but heartbreak is the default setting for Freo fans, and we’ll be back to do it all again next year.Ā

On the same day a West Australian side played in the Grand Final, @thewestaustralian newspaper saw fit to tee off on any fans who had the gall to cover the logos of Freo’s major sponsor, and one of Australia’s major polluters, Woodside.

Naturally, I started writing. Partly as catharsis, partly to play devil’s advocate with my own opinions, and hopefully challenge and sharpen them.

Am I a hypocrite? Probably. I’ve been around the oil and gas industry my whole life, but claiming that anyone who gets on a plane forfeits their right to demand better from the fossil fuel trade is an absurd argument. Just because I bet on Caleb Serong to win the Norm Smith doesn’t mean I’m not allowed to think there are too many gambling ads on TV either, BTW.

I sent my response to The West Australian in case they cared to hear the other side. No response. Thank you to @watoday.com.au for giving my thoughts a run. Ā

We’ve got a long way to go, but we could start by putting the petty whataboutism aside. None of us needs to be perfect to demand that we all do a little better. Go Freo! by @binnstagram

It’s been two years since the Fantasy Surfing gods last had their way with me. After finishing 22nd in the world in 2025 I thought these kinda days might have been behind me, but this morning, as Rabbits humbled me, jeans around flippers, with only a baby’s boogie board for support, @fantasy_or_die nearly lived up to its name. Serves me right for my horrific Rio Pro squad, really.

Thanks for filming, again, @tim_hawken. Surely it’s your turn soon? taken in Rabbit Hill, Yallingup by @binnstagram

Forty-seven! Woke up to a toast cake then spent the day at the beach and called it work. Missing my beautiful Stephy and little power plant of joy back home but life is great, surrounded by family and friends I love to bits. Very lucky, bloody happy, trying to never take it for granted.

EDIT: I don’t ask for much, but I’d love it if you could scan the QR code in the second-last frame and object to Woodside drilling a million holes in Scott Reef. Thanks! by @binnstagram

Yesterday we wished safe passage to one of lifeā€˜s true gentlemen, Rick Dunn.

ā€œRick always had a bit of Aussie regal in him,ā€ says @ddppkkkk Kyle, of our best mate’s Dad, ā€œwhen he spoke, you listenedā€. While Rick’s nobility was supported by his immaculate wardrobe, the Aussie side was never stronger than when mowing the lawn at Goldsmith Road in nothing but Speedos.

Rick was the first person (family and teachers aside) who ever told me off. Given I was a uni student who clearly knew everything, this came as somewhat of a shock. To have someone I respected so greatly deliver a firm but fair dressing down from a place of love, then quickly move on and continue to treat me as a fellow adult, when clearly still a brat, taught a lesson that has stuck forever.

Rick and Peta welcomed me into their world as a teenager in the late 90s, and I was far from the only ratbag they offered shelter, sandwiches, and a second home. Many of us still turn up unannounced all these years later.

On the rare occasion all three boys were back in Perth, Rick would continue to curate the world’s greatest front yard cricket pitch, as he has done forever. Rick would watch happily with a beer, occasionally sending down an over, as a bunch of now-40-year-old men with bad knees and kids of their own turned back the clock for a few hours

Rick and Peta’s ā€œretirementā€ saw them build a spectacular boutique hotel in Bali, and although Ubud had never been on my mind, I now had a second, second home, just up the road from my favourite wave in the world. I spent more time at Amori than any of the boys. Watching Mr Rick lean into his Bali Basil Fawlty era was another lesson on never half-assing anything, but it was the quiet moments and memories made that won’t quickly be forgotten.

Rick’s blueprint for living was perfect; firm handshakes, strong eye contact and smiles, getting what you give. Always moving, yet anchored by a beautiful family and a strong sense of place.

Hundreds of the boys’ mates came to pay their respects yesterday, and that speaks volumes. Although Rick declared his innings painfully early we’ll bat on in his honour for years to come. Rest in peace Mr Rick. by @binnstagram

A dozen-or-so squares that don’t come close to describing how insane the Gold Coast Pro was, with thanks to the powerhouse @be_ryder, indefatigable @andrewshield, and anyone else I stole shots from. Sorry!

Home runs like this are why our lot do what we do. Although the events are showcased worldwide, the real magic lies in the moments shared with mates, and we’ll be smiling about this one for years to come. I’m a lucky lad, forever grateful to do something I love and call it work. taken in Rainbow Bay Surf Club by @binnstagram
