As a first-gen raising a second-gen, I once carried the weight of breaking every barrier alone. But change unfolds across generations—the seeds I’ve sown will take root in yours and beyond, just as I have reaped the rewards of those before me.

My hope for Lotus Mademu is that she moves through the world knowing who she is. That she honors the parts of our culture that empower her. That she never forgets our native tongue—that she feels the resilience in her blood. That she knows she can build from nothing because she comes from those who always have.

At just three years old, she stands in a Nike-powered exhibit—in a photo creatively directed and styled by her mother. A testament to a legacy that endures.

In French, they have this phrase “le Bronx” which means disarray or basically ish a problem. This saying was popularized after the 70s when The Bronx was burning.
There have been plenty of times when the expressed preconceived notions of the Bronx have caused me shame. Yes, the Bronx has a tumultuous history, but many have failed to see the beauty amidst the rubble or acknowledge the intentional gov’t actions that failed the Bronx and it’s children.

Out of urban decay and systematic oppression, Hip-Hop culture, fashion influence, and political prowess rose from the ashes.

In recent years, the Bronx has given you Cardi B, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sonia Sotomayor, and Tarana Burke. These women have used their platform to challenge the status quo, increase awareness, and spark social movements.
