The best technology isn’t always the newest technology—it’s the right technology for the job.

This week, we had the opportunity to share our experience producing biochar using Aom’s kiln alongside four other kiln designs, testing four different feedstocks: rice straw, wood scraps, chipped longan wood, and eucalyptus.
The workshop, held in Sing Buri Province in collaboration with MTEC and Sing Buri Province, highlighted an important lesson: there is no one-size-fits-all solution.

The best outcomes come from matching the right technology with the right local conditions, feedstock, and community needs.
It’s always valuable to exchange knowledge, compare approaches, and continue improving practical solutions that can be adopted at scale.

🎙️ Episode #36: Can Smallholder Farmers Remove Carbon at Scale?

When people think about carbon removal, they often picture large industrial facilities and cutting-edge technology. But what if one of the world’s biggest climate solutions is already in the hands of millions of smallholder farmers?

In this episode of Carbon Conversations, Matt Rickard sits down with Yovindra Kanezin, CEO & Co-Founder of Reclimate, to explore the role of distributed biochar, why smallholder farmers are essential to scaling carbon removal, and how technology, carbon markets and local communities can work together to deliver meaningful climate impact.

Whether you’re involved in sustainability, agriculture, carbon markets or simply curious about the future of climate action, we hope you’ll enjoy this conversation.

When most people hear the words “carbon credit” they picture something abstract. A number on a spreadsheet. A line in a sustainability report.

A smallholder biochar carbon credit is different. It starts in a field. It starts with a farmer, a pile of waste, and a decision about what to do with it.

We have written a plain-language guide to what a biochar carbon credit actually is — from the agricultural waste that would otherwise burn, to the pyrolysis process, to independent verification, to what a buyer is purchasing when they buy from us.

No jargon. No abstraction. Just the real process, explained from the ground up.

Building trust. Scaling impact. Delivering real-time results.

Over the past few years, we’ve worked closely with farmers in Phrao, Northern Thailand, to build a trusted and scalable biochar program. This year, we’re seeing the results, with monthly production and biochar application continuing to increase as more farmers join the initiative.

One of the tools helping us manage this growth is our real-time onsite dashboard, which tracks biochar production, inventory, carbon removal, and field application. Having live operational data allows our local teams to monitor progress, support farmers, and ensure biochar is being returned to the soil where it can deliver the greatest benefit.

By converting agricultural residues into biochar instead of burning them in the open, the program helps:

🌱 Reduce open-field burning and improve air quality by lowering PM2.5 pollution.
🌱 Store carbon in a stable form for the long term.
🌱 Improve soil health and increase the soil’s ability to retain water, making farms more resilient during dry periods.

This is what climate action looks like when technology, local communities, and farmers work together. Thanks to @kwanpiromtara

It was great to see our COO, Kwanpirom Tara Suksri, speaking at Liveable Chiang Mai last weekend, sharing how biochar can help address one of Northern Thailand’s most pressing environmental challenges.

Aom spoke about the opportunity for communities to establish local biomass and waste management centres that convert agricultural residues and organic waste into biochar. Rather than burning these materials in the open, communities can transform them into a valuable resource that improves soils, supports farmers, reduces emissions, and creates new economic opportunities.

Community-based solutions like these have the potential to improve air quality, reduce wildfire and burning risks, and build more resilient local economies.

Thank you to the organisers of Liveable Chiang Mai for bringing together so many passionate people and organisations to discuss practical solutions for a healthier and more sustainable future.

Day two at the Climate Futures APAC Summit 2026 in Bangkok, and it was great to see our COO, Kwanpirom Tara Suksri, on stage for the session on “Asia’s Built Pathways to Durable Carbon Storage,” moderated by Alvin Lee from Puro.earth.

A big thank you to the entire organising team for delivering such a well-structured and professionally run event. It’s encouraging to see events like this taking place in Bangkok, bringing together leaders from across the carbon removal ecosystem.

As the sector continues to grow, we look forward to seeing even more opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation across the region.

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced it would be pausing new carbon removal purchases. Whether that becomes a full pause or simply a reduction in volumes, the impact on the market will be significant — Microsoft has been responsible for 80–90% of all global engineered CDR demand.

But this pause did not create a fragile market. It revealed one.

We have written about what that means — not from a boardroom, but from the hills of Northern Thailand, where the rains have just arrived after the worst smoke season in over a decade.

Because when a buyer of Microsoft‘s scale steps back, the projects most at risk are not the large engineered CDR facilities with institutional backing. They are the farmer-led, community-rooted projects where carbon income is the margin between a burning season and a biochar season.

The question this should be prompting is not whether carbon removal is worth buying. It is whether the market we have built to value it is sophisticated enough to capture what is actually being created.

We do not think it is. Not yet.

🚀 First batch of Aom Kilns delivered in Phrao, Thailand

Excited to share that the first batch of Aom Kilns — supported by Iron Software — has now arrived on site and is ready for deployment.

These kilns represent a step forward in how agricultural waste is managed:
reducing smoke pollution, improving air quality, and turning residues into valuable biochar for farmers.

Huge thanks to Iron Software for backing this work and helping accelerate practical, community-led climate solutions.

More updates to come as we begin rollout and training with Aom Kwanpirom Tara Suksri and the team.

In Phrao, Northern Thailand, our team has spent the past month doing something simple—but deeply important. Instead of letting crop waste be burned, we’ve been working with local communities to collect, clear, and store it safely.

Right now, Northern Thailand is experiencing some of the worst air pollution in years. Seasonal burning is a major driver, and every pile of agricultural residue we keep out of the fire is a step toward cleaner air and healthier communities.

Over the coming months, this material won’t go to waste—it will be transformed into hashtag#biochar, locking carbon away and creating long-term value for soils.

This is what climate action looks like on the ground: practical, local, and immediate.
