Formerly Knitting In The Wild
Yarn and stitch markers inspired by the outdoors - hand dyed and painted in Minnesota.

POSTS STORIES REELS

Hi, I’m Sarah - the maker behind birchwood + wool - formerly Knitting In The Wild!

Much as a fiber project grows while you work, birchwood + wool is an evolution. This business began as a simple love of knitting while I was sitting by a campfire in state parks across Minnesota. Over the last year it became more about nature and the rhythm of making.

I have realized that my love of knitting, my education in art, and past years making jewelry started to merge in stitch markers. I knew when I started making them that they had to be rustic and represent the time I spend sleeping in a tent (and more recently my vintage camper), hiking the trails, and surrounding myself with nature.

Today, birchwood + wool is a collection of handcrafted and hand painted stitch markers, fiber notions, and hand-dyed yarn - all inspired by my time in the woods. Every piece is thoughtfully made to be both beautiful and functional - tools you will reach for project after project, and skeins that feel like stories waiting to be told in stitches.

I am also a breast cancer survivor so a portion of my proceeds from certain items are donated to breast cancer research. by @birchwoodandwool

Here are a few items that you will find in my booth at @alfiberfest! I’m so excited and I can’t believe it is two weeks away!! by @birchwoodandwool

This is Blue Spruce. The newest addition to my outdoor colorways!

A little blue, a little green, and a touch of silver grey. This new colorway feels right at home in the leaves.

I couldn’t resist casting on a sweater to see it knit up, and I’m loving how those subtle shades are working together. Just the kind of color I want to be working with next to the campfire.

Swipe to see Blue Spruce on the needles! What would you make with it?

Take Flight in both super bulky and fingering weight. Inspired by the Kingfisher, these colors are vibrant and explosive.

These will be coming with me to @alfiberfest but there are some in the online shop right now!

Edit: please note that the photos in the listing online are closer to true. These photos were taken on a cloudy day so they do look moodier than in real life.

I always do my best to post as true to life colors on my website. Those photos are taken in natural daylight and I do not color correct them if I don’t need to.

Thank you! by @birchwoodandwool

A little behind the scenes for you from my weekend. I’m so excited for all the things coming up here at Birchwood + Wool!

I really have to get better at my emails! If you aren’t signed up, head on over to the website and sign up. That’s going to be a goal going forward. Regular emails to let you all know what’s coming up!

Enjoy this little mash up of me dyeing North Shore Mist on a new fingering weight base that will be available online soon. by @birchwoodandwool

Holycrap! I’m official! I have a sign and everything.

I’ve been listening to the @shedoesmindset podcast and trying to tap in to that badass woman that I know I am and so last week I just hit the order button on this sign.

I’m not sure what made me hesitate. I’m a damn business! I’m in markets. My stuff is being sold in yarn shops and art sheds. I’m the real deal, kids!

So why did it take me all year to get this sign? Because of that little voice that said, “what if you fail?”

And when I hit the order button my answer was, “but what if I succeed?! Won’t that be a kicker?!?”

So here’s to me, busting my butt to succeed, one sign, one stitch marker, one skein at a time! Welcome along!

If you are coming to Yarnover this weekend you will have the opportunity to snag one of these very limited edition skeins! I have dyed the colorway ONLY for Yarnover MN 2026.

The swimming cyans and greens remind me of bogs and peatlands in Minnesota. Part of colors in nature, this years Yarnover skein will also come with a little stitch marker attached.

Make sure you stop by Birchwood + Wool’s booth, say hi, check out all the pretty things and get your special skein while they last!

Fingering weight, high twist merino/nylon blend.
400yds/100g

Can’t wait to see you Saturday!
