No, my friends, this isn’t a chicken 🐔 this is the Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo, also known as the “phantom of the forest.” It earned this nickname because of how elusive it is 😱

I’ve heard of countless people who spend their whole lives searching for this species, like Indiana Jones hunting for the Holy Grail.

Despite its elusive nature, I was lucky enough to spot it when I was just starting out in this hobby, alongside my friend Mike and thanks to the pointers of another friend (and best birding guide in Panama) Natalia.

Last week, I was looking at some cool pictures by someone who practices digiscoping (taking pictures by combining a smartphone with a spotting scope), and a particular comment caught my attention. It went something like this: “Wow, you must have incredibly expensive gear to get such amazing shots,” to which the person kindly replied, “Thank you” ☺️.

Of course, the gear wasn’t actually “expensive” when compared to standard wildlife photography equipment; photography gear can be cheap or expensive depending on your budget, but it’s worth remembering that this discipline doesn’t rely 100% on the camera or lens you use, but also on patience, talent, luck, outfit and so on. You wouldn’t tell a great chef they must own a magnificent frying pan, or tell Picasso he has a good paintbrush; the same applies to photography 😰 gear alone doesn’t make a photo stand out 🥲

I’m sure the person didn’t mean any harm, but I’ve heard comments like that many times. That said, I’ve seen terrible photos taken by people with $20,000 worth of gear, and incredible photos taken by people using an iPhone 8 and a pair of binoculars 🔭

This little friend is called Yellow-bellied Elaenia because…you guessed it 😱 it has a yellow belly 😂

🤔 Don't most Elaenias have yellow bellies? Why is this one the only one called that? Well, scientists can call birds whatever they want. Actually they say this guy has the yellowest belly 😰
