For minority businesses, survival and solidarity are not opposites.

Today we stand in solidarity with immigrant communities affected by ICE actions and the fear they create.

As you many of you already know, BIRD is a women owned/minority owned business, built by people who know that fear firsthand.

For many of us, shutting down isn’t a symbolic choice, it’s a real economic risk to our families, our staff, and our community.

So today we keep building and advocating for dignity, safety, and humanity for immigrants while continuing to provide livelihoods.

Solidarity looks different when you’re the one on the line.

Charlotte has never lacked culture. It has only lacked belief from people who weren’t looking closely.

For years, the easy critique has been that this city has no real food identity, that its restaurant scene is manufactured. But a city’s identity isn’t handed down by critics or created in a boardroom. It’s built slowly, by people willing to stay, risk something and make honest work.

We built BIRD here because we believed something meaningful could come from here.

Being on the cover of @thelocalpalate is another reminder that independent ideas can grow in Charlotte without becoming polished into sameness and that the people building with conviction are shaping a culture that is entirely our own.

To everybody creating something real here…that’s the vibe, keep going.

The city isn’t coming. It’s already here.

2024 Valentine’s Day, after work, eating pizza while imagining what it would be like to actually dine in at Bird.

We werent even sure we’d have room in there to fit a bar or really where anything would go. So we had to just sit with it, the dirt & one another until the right design revealed itself in time.

Two years later, we’re still dreaming. Still building. Still grateful.

Feeling blessed to share another Valentine’s Day with you.

In 2012 when Kerrel and I met, Sundays quickly became a time to slow down, rest, and... eat pizza.
 Back in Chicago we’d chase new pies every weekend until Kerrel decided to make his own.
 We kept that ritual going through lots of bad dough, good pizza, and everything in between.

Even got married on a Sunday and of course - we ate pizza (s/o Nick Nitti @fornorosso 😘)

Now, we want to share that ritual with you.
