Atlantic Puffins spend most of their lives far out at sea and only return to land for a few months each year to breed. That’s also the best time to see them up close. Sometimes, very up close.

Unlike most woodpeckers, Green Woodpeckers spend much of their time on the ground searching for ants, using a tongue that can extend up to 10 cm beyond their bill.

A gentle look, a fierce hunter 🤎

Despite their soft appearance, Red-backed Shrikes are famous for caching food by impaling prey on thorns and barbed wire – a habit that earned them the nickname ‘butcher bird’. They spend their summers here in Europe before migrating south to Africa again.

Breaking the surface 💦

Kingfishers don’t make things easy. They can spend minutes sitting perfectly still, scanning the water below. Then, in a split second, they launch themselves headfirst into the water in pursuit of a fish. If the dive is successful, they’ll often return to a nearby perch to beat and swallow their catch. During courtship season, however, that fish may end up as a gift for the female instead.
•
For those wondering why the reflection doesn’t perfectly match the bird: that’s caused by the rolling shutter effect. Instead of capturing the entire image at once, the camera sensor reads the scene line by line. During extremely fast movement, different parts of the bird are recorded milliseconds apart, causing subtle distortions that can make the reflection appear slightly different from the subject itself.
