🏝️ Shorebird season has arrived! ✨

Every year, thousands of migratory shorebirds make incredible journeys to the Caribbean, relying on our beaches 🏖️, mudflats 🪱, mangroves 🌱, and wetlands to rest and refuel. But many shorebird populations are declining, and the wetlands they depend on are under increasing pressure from habitat loss, pollution, disturbance, and climate change.

The good news? You can help! 🙌

This migration season, take part in shorebird counts and contribute to the conservation of these amazing birds. By completing at least three counts between August and October, your observations can contribute to both the Caribbean Waterbird Census (CWC) and the International Shorebird Survey (ISS)—providing vital information to help identify and protect the places shorebirds need most. 🗺️💪

Getting started is easy! 🥳 Simply join the CWC and ISS projects in eBird, select BOTH projects when you start your checklist, and complete at least three counts during migration. Great news is that by doing this, each checklist will count towards both projects! 📊

Whether you're an experienced birder or just getting started, BirdsCaribbean has ID guides, webinars, and plenty of resources to help you join the count. 📚🖥️

Bonus challenge: Complete one of your surveys during World Shorebirds Day (September 6) & the Global Shorebird Counts (🗓️September 1–7), and your data can contribute to three international monitoring efforts!

Every count helps us better understand—and better protect—Caribbean wetlands and the remarkable birds that depend on them. Check out our latest blog to learn how to get involved! Link in bio🔝

If you want to learn more about the ISS, join a webinar on August 4th! Register using this link 🔗 :

Amazing birds and amazing speakers (OK, I’m one of the keynotes) at this year’s @birdscaribbean conference, July 23-27 in Trinidad and Tobago! It’s their landmark 25th international conference, so there’s a lot to talk about and even more to see … and it promises to be festive and fun. My target birds: Tufted Coquette, White-bearded Manakin, and (if I’m lucky) Ornate Hawk-Eagle, which I haven’t seen since my first stay at the Asa Wright Nature Center a quarter of a century ago — about when the first conference was held. by @birdscaribbean

1️⃣1️⃣ Parrots, One Mission🎯.

The Caribbean is home to 11 incredible endemic parrot 🦜 species found nowhere else on Earth. But from habitat loss to catastrophic storms and trapping for the illegal pet trade, their survival hangs in a delicate balance.

Their conservation statuses look grim😔 — right now, every single one of these iconic birds are on the IUCN Red List of threatened species. But we can change the trajectory📈 for these spectacular birds.

Join leading scientists, conservationists, and advocates at the upcoming BirdsCaribbean Conference and participate in our dedicated Parrot Conservation Summit. Together, we will map out the future of Caribbean parrot protection💚.

Secure your spot today! Visit 🔗 bit.ly/Parrot-Summit to learn more about the Summit and to register for the conference.

Here’s a Fantastic Father fact for you 😃: Spotted Sandpipers were one of the first bird species described in which the roles of the males and females are reversed!

After the female lays the eggs, she often heads off to find another mate, leaving the male behind to tend to the nest and eggs🪹. The devoted father takes on full responsibility, single-handedly incubating the eggs and protecting and raising the chicks until they are ready to fly. Scientists have found that male Spotted Sandpipers actually have higher levels 📈 of prolactin than females do. Prolactin is the hormone that triggers parenting instincts thus explaining how these birds are wired for fatherhood each breeding season💪🏽.
