Forever wouldn't have been long enough.

Rest Easy, my best friend and my little shadow, Luna.

You were Luna, linda, woofy, miss ma'am, ma'amsie, piggy and The Inspector, but most importantly you were my friend, and my nurse when I needed it, my study buddy and by far the only cat I trusted not to destroy the house unsupervised.

I can't imagine not seeing you as the first thing I wake up to, and feeling you try to stay on top of me in the middle of the night when I roll over and you refuse to get up.

Red-rumped parrots (Psephotus haematonotus).
Two males on either side of a female. These guys are often known as 'grass parrots' colloquially as they spend a lot of time foraging on the ground in open habitat such as woodlands and grasslands.

2025 Wildlife Rehabbing- it's been WILD. Lots of steep learning curves, between researching husbandry needs of many new species (to me) in care, increasing my capacity with new aviaries both bought and incredibly generously gifted by @_brookecrompton_ and spending an ungodly amount of hours washing, scrubbing, feeding and driving to pick up, release, or take patients to the amazing zoo vet team at the Australian Wildlife Health Centre at Healesville Sanctuary.

This year has seen many different bird species in care, with some highlights being rarities such as a very lost young Westlands Petrel, two red-chested buttonquails who had mishaps during migration, and getting two temporarily care for an owlet nightjar, a barn owl, and a few other raptor species before they went out for release or onto Boobook Wildlife Shelter for specialist care.

Nalini at Boobook Wildlife Shelter has put up with my calls and questions as one of her carers for another year, and I have had an increase of rescuers, other carers and shelters in my network sharing advice, and asking for assistance this year which has been wonderful.

Here's to next year, more birds and maybe a mammal here and there 😅

Went up to Hattah for the first time in mid-june and saw some great birds and beautiful landscapes. Looking forward to going back in the spring.

A male Crested bellbird (Oreoica gutturalis), photo taken in early January in peak summer time, when we ventured out to Dja Dja Wurrung country early in the morning to try to catch some birds near some dams before the temperature climbed to 37°.
These striking passerines forage around ground level or lower canopy, feeding on seeds and insects, and they are more often seen than heard.

A beautiful Silvereye, which I think after much debate is a south-eastern silvereye (Zosterops lateralis westernensis). Silvereyes are gorgeous little passerines which eat nectar, fruit and insects. They are known to raid orchards because they are so small they can often get through bird netting!

I have cared for these before as a wildlife carer and they are the loveliest little birds and quite hardy for a bird that weighs about 13g. They can be sedentary or seasonally mobile, with populations migrating from Tasmania to mainland Australia during winter.

Male superb fairy-wren (Malurus cyaneus). Superb fairy-wrens belong to the genus Malurus, meaning malos (soft) oura (tail) in Greek. Cyaneus is Latin for dark-blue.
Although superb fairy-wrens are known to be very socially monogamous, having breeding pairs, they are very promiscuous 🤣 with each bird in the pair, often breeding with other mates, and raising the offspring communally. Fairy-wren drama is real.
Males are often seen carrying flower petals and displaying them to females during courtship and will bravely sing in open areas whilst predators are near to show how fit they are!
