Every single one of us came from a mother.And in the richest country in the world, we have the worst birth outcomes and the highest maternal death rate in the industrialized world.84% of these deaths are preventable. Full stop Preventable. Meaning we know how to stop them. We are choosing not to.We fight because Kira should be here. Because none of this should matter — the interviews, the moments, the awards. We would trade every bit of it for a safer birth rate. For Kira. This week is Black Maternal Mental Health Week (July 19–25) 💗Pregnancy and postpartum are hard enough.Black mothers navigate that on top of a maternal health system that too often doesn’t listen, doesn’t believe, and doesn’t show up when it matters most. The truth? BETTER CARE. BETTER OUTCOMES. Lower pay.In 31 states, Medicaid still reimburses certified nurse-midwives at just 75–98% of what physicians receive for the exact same vaginal delivery. Not a different service. Not a different outcome. Just less payMidwifery care is safe, effective, and often preferred by the families who receive it — yet policy continues to undervalue it. Less than 15% of women diagnosed with maternal mental health disorders receive treatment. 💛Not because the need isn’t real. Not because the science isn’t there. But because our systems still fail to screen, support, and follow through — especially for the mothers who need it most.Maternal mental health is maternal health.
