I’m realizing I haven’t done a very good job of telling everyone that Katherine, Maple and I are awaiting the arrival of a new member of our family in April. We are full of excitement, anxiety, hope, but mostly just eager to begin with a person who will change and shape the rest of our lives.

I’ve been thinking lately of each member of my family: my parents, siblings, cousins, grandparents, aunts, uncles, in laws, and friends, and how grateful I am for each of you, whether I see you every day or not for years. I remind myself that whenever I have difficult times as a parent or feel myself responding to Maple with impatience and nerve, I only have to think of all the love and kindness given to me by each of you, and draw from that to pass on to her.

Most of all I‘m lucky to go through this with Katherine as my partner. She is generous, fiercely resilient, and gentile. That kid already hit the jackpot. by @bisonmessink

Turn sound up and listen close and you can hear Maple speaking from my backpack. She says, “thank you wind, thank you deer.” 💚

Couldn’t think of a better way to honor and remember Chris. Chris and I watched so many games at Comerica Park from this vantage. During the Tigers lean years in the early 2000s we befriended the usher of the primo section and he’d let us grab a couple empty seats. We somehow kept up our head nod bargain once the Tigers got good and watched Miguel Cabrera’s prime from the on deck circle. Chris was the only person I ever knew who loved baseball quite as much as I did. taken in Comerica Park by @bisonmessink

I’ve lost my best friend Chris, suddenly, tragically. What a rare kind of friendship we had. Particularly, among men. Chris was my closest confidant and my partner. He and I had totally different personalities but for whatever reason we instantly clicked when we met at age 17. He's the person who defined my formative years and my adult life. The person who knew me better than anyone, who knew the best parts of me and all of my flaws. We balanced each other. He looked up to me and we both knew it. I found his passion and vulnerability alluring and inspiring, and I envied his charm. Together he and I experienced and accomplished things we never could have on our own. He was so goddamn fun! I cannot imagine celebrating more intensely than I have with Chris. Just the purest, radiant, overflowing joy of life.

His love was free and generous. Children adored him. Communities of people sprouted and bloomed around him. Sometimes Chris willed them into existence with deliberate intention and at other times they appeared without any effort at all, as natural as the grasses of the field. These friendships and communities are his legacy and his gift to us, to nurture and care for. I will hold memories of him for the rest of my life, and if any of you have memories of Chris, I sure would love to hear them. by @bisonmessink

On a Wednesday afternoon four summers ago, Slider was our only guest when Katherine and I hiked to the top of Slide Mountain and got married. This week we returned to leave her remains. She went too soon and I still miss her. by @bisonmessink
