“When I Go Outside” by Geordie Sabbagh

The film is a portrait of a young Kurdish artist who found a way to transform trauma into art, to turn his own voice into something that speaks for others. Art as revolution, both inward and outward.

The filmmaker constructs layers of meaning through form itself, creating art within art. The main character is a remarkable storyteller, and in the hands of this director, his work truly comes alive on screen.

“Kurdish Family”
What would a Kurdish family look like?
This is a question I have carried for a long time.

They stand together as if posing for a photograph, suspended between past and present. In this room, memory, displacement, resistance, struggle, and care coexist. Beneath their feet lies a Kurdish rug. An olive tree grows nearby, holding the space—rooted in connection, belonging, and continuity.

At the center sits a grandmother, dressed in traditional clothing from Efrîn, a red scarf framing her presence. She carries the weight of generations. Around her, children’s toys rest on the ground—quiet traces of life continuing. The mother stands in traditional Kurdish dress (Kiras û Xeftan), layered with gold, wearing a necklace that reads Jin Jiyan Azadî—Women, Life, Freedom. The father wears fighter’s clothing, a gun on his shoulder and a pen in his pocket, holding both resistance and the act of remembering.

Behind them hang four flags, marking the countries they live in. At the center is the Kurdish flag, insisting: we exist, we are here, we have always been here. We belong. Nearby appears Shamaran—the legendary Queen of wisdom and beauty—found in almost every Kurdish home, watching over the family.

Watch out for this.

A few days ago, I received an email from Summer Residency @summer.residency / Abstract Mag @abstract.mag that felt like a personal invitation to their residency in Georgia. I was genuinely excited.

Since then, I’ve come across multiple posts from artists showing nearly identical emails, sometimes with slightly different wording, but essentially the same message.
This has left many of us confused and with a lot of unanswered questions. Emails and DMs seem to be going unanswered, and clear information has been hard to find.

I’m not making accusations, but I think artists should be aware and ask questions before getting their hopes up, as many of us unfortunately did after receiving these emails.

Has anyone received a clear answer or clarification?
