something a little fun to finish the year 🎉

thank you for sharing my love for food & travel in 2023 🥰

here’s to 2024✌️it’s a leap year!

wishing everyone a beautiful 2024 full of fun and delicious food ❤️🥂

while reflecting on the year, it wasn’t all good but the biggest takeaway was learning to believe in myself 🫶

here are some highlights:

✈️ travelled to Japan and Singapore
🎧 went to 3 music festivals and 7 concerts (saw 4/5 top artists from my spotify wrapped)
📚 read 36 books
👩🏻‍💻 left an unfulfilling job and started one that makes me happier
🍦 ate more ice cream than I can count

back in Tokyo for a week after travelling to so many cities.

Started with some yummy snacks on the train.

Tried @benscookiesjapan got matcha & white chocolate and dark chocolate. Both cookies were nice and soft but I preferred the matcha.

Found some very tasty duck ramen at 9th Keisuke the broth was thicker which I love 😍It was ¥1450

@ahappypancake has amazingly fluffy soufflé pancakes. I’ve been a few times and the milk tea one is my favourite 😘 The tiramisu was a bit random though, I wasn’t expecting to pour coffee on the pancakes 🫠

We were craving something different for dinner and tried Japanese Italian food at Al Dente Shinjuku. I actually really enjoyed the pastas here.

cutest kakigori shop 🍓🎀🍧

Found the best kakigori at Kooriya Peace in Kichijoji 😍 It’s a bit further out from Tokyo but close to the Ghibli Museum. If you’re in the area, totally check it out! ⚠️ it’s cash only btw

🍓 Strawberry ¥1600
🍈 Melon ¥1800

If you haven’t tried kakigori, it’s a Japanese shaved ice. The pieces of shaved ice were incredibly thin and fluffy. It was so refreshing. The strawberry came with a really cream on top, adding a new texture. The melon syrup was really flavourful and there were even bits of melon inside.

Shirakawa-go 🌳🏠🍡

This was one of my highlights 😍 We took a day trip to the cutest historic village called Shirakwago from Kanazawa.

Spent our time exploring the sites and trying the local food. There’s also a World Heritage site with preserved buildings.

What surprised me the most was the fish in the gutters 🥺 the village was just that clean!

The architecture of the Gassho-zukuri buildings are stunning. They are all built from natural resources from the area - no nails or metal.

Ended the day back in Kanazawa and had yakisoba for dinner.

talk about satay-sty 🤤🍗

@ria.australia serves authentic Indonesian street food and you can try it in their beautiful restaurant with great vibes in Sydney. All their dishes were so incredibly flavourful. Thank you for the #invite we absolutely wiped our plates clean!

🍢 sate ayam - chicken satay, soy marinate, peanut sauce, lime, shallots, pickles
🍗 ayam penyet - crispy fried chicken, tofu, tempeh, spiced crumbs, sambal terasi
🍖 iga penyet - beef ribs, tofu, tempeh, spiced crumbs, sambal terasi
🍚 nasi goreng
🍄 crispy mushroom
🍹 es cendol with durian - housemade iced cendol jelly, coconut milk, palm sugar & durian
🍹 lemon tea

We tried two types of sambal - terasi which is their signature and garlic. They are quite spicy 🌶 but I loved it ❤️‍🔥

I had to try the cendol with durian because I’ve never seen it before. The durian added a new tasty dimension to an already well-loved drink.

My favourite dish had to be the iga penyet - which are beef ribs. They were mouth-wateringly tender and broke apart so easily. The flavourful sauce and texture from the spiced crumbs made it a party in my mouth.

Of course, we got some yummy classics such as satay chicken, fried chicken and nasi goreng.

Kyoto 🚆 Kanazawa

When you experience your first two earthquakes in one day 😳

We travelled from Kyoto to Kanazawa, which was our 6th destination.

First thing we did was go to Omicho market, it’s more of a seafood market for people to buy stuff to take home. There was some food to eat and we got a coffee from @petra_bake_coffee (¥690).

For lunch, we visited a random restaurant and I got the 3 types of tuna bowl (¥1000).

Next we visited Kanazawa castle which had some very interesting history. It burnt down like 6 times and they kept rebuilding it.

The Kenroku-en gardens were nearby. It was so peaceful and beautiful. The trees were so interesting to look at. I actually experienced my first earthquake here, we just felt the ground shake for 10 seconds.

Dinner was at Ramen Wakadaisho. I got a ramen topped with slices of pork (¥1100)

We did an evening walk in the Naga-machi District which is the samurai town. it’s definitely quieter at night and I enjoyed the vibes.

We experienced our second earthquake while in the airbnb but everything was fine.

a quali-tea brunch 🍵🫖🍚

🫖 Salmon Ochazuke ($24.5) rice, nimono mushrooms, salmon sashimi, ikura, chives & japanese green tea
🍟 Gobo Chips $13.5
🍗 Chicken Karaage $15.5
🍜 Yakibuta Tantan Udon ($26) tonkotsu broth with slow-cooked pork, leek, ajitama, house-made chilli oil and Sancho pepper.

If you’re looking for new places to try in Sydney @tentosyd is a great contender. The vibes were great and they meticulously present their dishes so beautifully. It made me so excited to take a bite 😍

This was my first time trying Ochazuke. It’s an effortless dish with simple flavours. It reminds me of congee but with firmer rice.

An honourable mention is the gobo chips. Loved them, they were nice and crispy.

I had like 3 ice creams on this day but it was hot and we walked a lot 🥵🍦

This is a lesson in how to pack a bunch of touristy activities in one day in Kyoto and still have time to eat 😅

Spent the morning in Arashiyama. First, we visited the monkey park and the views are so pretty. The monkeys are quite chaotic and you can feed them. There are some beautiful parks in this area and it feels peaceful in the morning.

Along the walk to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, I found some 🍦tofu ice cream (¥400) It was quite flavourless but very interesting. We explored the bamboo forest for a bit, it was very busy.

We had lunch at Arashiyama Curry. The owners were so sweet and the food was perfection. Such a large serving size and the katsu was perfectly crispy, I got a 🍛pork katsu curry (¥1100). There was a dessert shop next door @_kin.no.hana_ I got a 🍦roasted green tea ice cream (¥750) because I wanted to try some montblanc. It really hit the spot, I loved the texture of the montblanc.

We took a taxi to the Golden Temple, it’s very grand and beautiful to look at. Maybe try going earlier in the day to avoid crowds though. There was some 🍡mochi glazed in sweet soy sauce (¥250). The texture was good and since they were fresh off the grill, it had a slight charred taste.

We went to the Fushimi Inari Shrine. I highly recommend walking to the top. Not only is the view beautiful, but there are a lot less people up there (don’t worry they still have vending machines up there). They also had some soft serves at the top so naturally I got a 🍦soy and vanilla swirl (¥400)

Since we were exhausted by the end of the day, we wanted a lazy night in. Got some 🥟gyoza from a restaurant (¥250 for 6) on the way back to our airbnb and visited the convenience store to complete the rest of our dinner. You should do this at least once in Japan! Nishiki Market ⛩️🍣🍤🍓

Here are some things to try at Nishiki Market. It’s such a busy market and I’m sure there’s plenty more but this is what I ate. Let me know if you have any recommendations 💕

Kobe beef melted in my mouth, it was incredible. Prawn tempura was good but not groundbreaking.

We actually decided halfway through that we wanted to sit down and eat so we found this awesome shop serving in tuna omakase - it was a special experience. The tuna was so fresh and really fatty.

For dessert I got strawberry daifuku and sakura mochi, both satisfied my sweet tooth and were so bouncy.

Hiroshima 🚉 Kyoto

First stop was Nishiki market for lunch. Started off with a prawn tempura and kobe beef, both were amazing. We actually decided halfway through that we wanted to sit down and eat so we found this awesome shop serving in tuna omakase - it was a special experience. For dessert I got strawberry daifuku and sakura mochi, both satisfied my sweet tooth and were so bouncy.

We explored the older streets of Kyoto and visited the Kōdai-ji Temple & Kiyomizu-dera Niomon Gate. We also found a mini bamboo forest that wasn’t as packed as the main one. I found mitarashi dango, it’s drowned in a sweet soy sauce glaze - I love these so much!

If you’re looking for unique Vietnamese street food, try @coba_restaurants

This is my first time trying Vietnamese sizzling beef steak it was delicious and flavourful! 😍 They also give you a crunchy bread roll to soak up all the delicious juices. The presentation was adorable too, it was on a cow-shaped hot plate.

I also tried the braised pork rice and that was so tasty, the pork was super tender and fell apart so easily 🤤
