When I first began making films in Pittsburgh, most of the scripts we wrote were minimal. Fresh out of college I had few contacts, few resources, and so we could rarely afford to make anything more complicated than one or two characters in a room talking. During that era, Jess Paul brought me the script for Burying Baby, all the way back around 2017, but for one reason or another, we never got around to shooting it.

In 2023 Jess flew back from LA for what ended up being my all time favorite days of film production. Over the course of 5 days we shot the short film Lorica, a proof of concept for my upcoming feature Saint Mick, and finally, after all these years: Burying Baby. The process and personnel are what made the production my favorite, but there was also such a strange joy in filming what was ostensibly a 2017 script with the people and resources I now had access to in 2023. It felt almost nostalgic, creating something new while feeling like it was simultaneously something I would have made at a much earlier point in my career.

I’m deeply grateful for the experience. Directing Jess and Curtis Caldwell through such a tender script (captured stunningly by cinematographer Jossua K. Olar) was an absolute privilege, and I’m delighted to finally share the film with you all today. Link in bio. by @bitsizedproductions
