🇰🇷 고모의 공기- Aunt’s Gonggi is a sculptural tribute to family, memory, and gratitude. I created five steel forms in the traditional shape of a Gonggi dol, which are game pieces used in a classic Korean children’s game similar to Jacks. The sculpture I created barely fits on your palm, the original game piece fits between two pinched fingers. During my first visit to Korea as a child, I spent countless hours playing Gonggi with my gomos (aunt in Korean); sitting together in a circle, laughing, and tossing the brightly colored stones in rhythmic patterns. This body of work revisits that cherished ritual through my first exploration in steel sculpture.
Each form was carefully constructed by cutting and welding steel planes to mimic the proportions and silhouette of the original plastic stones. I filled them with sand to give tangible weight. The arduous labor of hammering, grinding, and assembling each familiar object became a calming, meditative practice offering a space to reflect on family.
These five Gonggi dols are gifts for each of my five gomos; an homage to the joy they gave me and the memories we built together. In revisiting this small but meaningful game, I’m also preserving a piece of Korean culture that was passed to me through the hands of my family, rooted in love, play, and family tradition. Through material and scale, I aimed to transform a nostalgic childhood activity into a lasting expression of gratitude and connection to the family I rarely get to see. These sculptures are concrete vessels of these memories, warmth, and love that continue to help anchor me to my Korean roots and family. 🇰🇷 by @bjylee5
