Today we’re talking about the 1998 period romantic dramedy Shakespeare in Love with special guest Izzy Custodio (@bk_rewind). Plus: Grace Kelly’s Iron Man, Hamnet psychosis, and Billy Crystal making movie stars.

Hi everyone! I wanted to alert you to a new project from one of my favorite film YouTubers, @patrickhwillems called Power Trip!! It’s about a rideshare driver who gets into a kind of awkward situation with a passenger that leads to a conversation touching on things a lot of you are probably thinking about—gig work, AI, annoying tech guys, class conflict, etc.

If you’ve seen Patrick’s work before, you know how talented he is. I have to say I was pretty impressed with how he created tension in such a tight format, thanks in part I’m sure to his incredible collaborators. It stars Tony nominee (!!) Julie Knitel, Amir Arison (who is seared into my mind from American Horror Story lol), and was written by Matthew Kelly, who you might know as @nandovmovies .

I really encourage you to check it out! You can actually catch it *on the big screen* at Regal Essex Crossing in New York September 24-30. There will even be Q&As with the filmmakers following each screening so it should be a great time. Grab your tickets at the Regal website or at the link in my story!!

Barbara Stanwyck said Frank Capra taught her to act with her eyes while filming Ladies of Leisure. “If you can think it, you can make the audience know it.” by @bk_rewind

I interviewed Catherine Russell about her wonderful book “The Cinema of Barbara Stanwyck.” It’s probably my favorite book written about her so I highly recommend you check it out! Interview linked in stories! by @bk_rewind

In 1961, The Barbara Stanwyck Show was canceled by NBC after just one season. Stanwyck was pretty openly livid about this, and had every right to be. She’d pitched a Western series about women on the frontier, but was told by the network no one wanted to see women in Westerns. They instead made a great effort to persuade her to do an anthology series, like many other film actresses who’d transitioned to TV. Stanwyck won an Emmy for her first season, then NBC promptly canceled her show and nearly every other actress-led anthology series on air, citing an audience craving for Westerns. Shortly after this, Nielsen published a study that determined women watched more Westerns than men. Go figure. More on this in my latest video ✨ (and yes this headline did make me laugh) by @bk_rewind
