Instructions on not giving up 🌿
@adalimonwriter @prospect_park

Patient, plodding, a green skin
growing over whatever winter did to us,
a return...
to the strange idea of continuous living despite
the mess of us, the hurt, the empty.

Fine then,
I’ll take it,
the tree seems to say, a new slick leaf
unfurling like a fist to an open palm,
I’ll take it all. by @bk_undergreen

❤️‍🔥 It is officially Zohran Mamdani week (month, and year) in NYC! What a time to make and be this history.

NYC communities *of all stripes* and *all boroughs* are nothing but ENERGIZED by the honest, grounded, participatory, electric campaign ads in Hindi, Arabic, Spanish, and Bangla, etc; the canvassing in queer clubs, taxi driver night shifts, elderly exercise programs, mosques, synagogues, mandir, and churches, and *very* clear messages and plans for the cost-of-living crisis that has broken this city. Having grown up in post-Apartheid South Africa, post-authoritarian Uganda, post-9/11 NYC, and with heritage in post-Partition India and Pakistan--he is uniquely suited to and equipped for the particular political moment we are in.

We are here for it! What an honor to live in this city with its first Muslim and South Asian mayor who exudes being 'in it' and 'of it' for all of us.

For the last two years, I've opened most of my classes with a database of UN Peace Agreements going back over a century. There are hundreds of peace agreements, or contracts, in it.

These documents which outline what transitioning from extreme atrocity to 'nonviolence' or systemic state or armed violence to 'ceasefire' or civil/international war to 'peace', and have been the most commonly used technology mediating state-society and interstate relations of the last century.

How should they be assessed in what they cover, what's written, what they imply, well before they have a chance 'succeed' or 'fail'?

Like the word 'humanitarian', the word 'peace' automatically implies this is something good for everyone and we should all support it. If you don't or if you offer critical perspectives or outraged dissent, you are automatically rendered against peace, unhelpful, radical, etc, etc.

If you haven't had a chance yet to read the 21-point plan negotiated between Trump and Netanyahu, with some degree of participation or nominal nodding by the Qatari, Egyptian, and Turkish governments (some with reservations)---please take a look at the full text of the plan here: https://lnkd.in/eTQcgKHD.

Using some of the questions below, would you describe this as a peace plan? If not, what language would you use to describe what is actually written here, what it implies, and for whom?

Language. Matters. So. Much. Mostly because most folks will hear peace plan and celebrate or feel relieved or immediately, say, great.

Paletinians from any background, faction, or party, were absent from the generation of this plan. by @bk_undergreen

It's been just over two weeks since the full vision and spirit of Coletivo Colibri broke time over the course of four days of electric honoring, celebration, and marking clear beginnings with steady nods to so many transitions that help those beginnings come to life--including loving farewells to what used to be.

The always present signature of Mestra Colibri (@katiacolibri) everywhere.

More than 300 collective years of committed (and still very much living, moving, making, and shaping) capoeira life on a stage of 13 mestras--what a presence..

Paired with 400 years of meticulously researched history of women, femmes & queer folks in capoeira (the parallel magic and work and craft and commitment of Instructor Fantasma (@fantasma.pedro), in the image of his visionary teacher and mentor, Mestra Colibri. *They. Even. Published. A. Book.* | Link in comments.

Passing each other between games to sip water or catch a breath, we all kept exchanging silent nods.

This is stunning. This is surreal. We are here.  Nothing else needed to be said.

In a time of deep loneliness, fracture, and transitional uncertainty, I am deeply in awe of and inspired by Mestra Colibri's relentless remembering, leadership, technical bad-assery, and vision to making big ideas come to life, to making unspoken histories the very natural center of the canon, and to never missing a moment to let folks know they are valued, remembered, and have so much they can do in this short time on earth.

Some people are memory keepers and some are builders. Some people are operations wizards and some are big ideas people. Some people live in imagination and some get by oh pragmatism.

Mestra Colibri is a rare and inspiring combination of all of them.

As she architects elaborate, history-making, multi-day events, she remembers everyday details about your life, sending notes, crafting gestures, or showing up in unexpected ways.

It has made me weep several times over the last few years.

What a profound pleasure to be in your orbit and to keep learning from you in so many ways.

What a birthday month.
Getting older, if we are permitted to, is an endless humming.

Thrashing around, trying to stay afloat, trying to see ahead.

Then, we rest, right here.

We make the road by walking. And screaming, and laughing, and cooking, and hustling, and loving, and crying.

Today, this century, or next. And then it's someone else's turn.

We look around. Now...there are more. We are here. Until we aren't. A little more together, even when falling apart.

Professor @piaocapoeira arrived to class last Monday moving a drop more carefully than usual. A strain in his back, out of nowhere, familiar to the rest of us who have already welcomed our 40s. Having to abandon whatever he might normally start with, he quickly scanned the room.

I know that look.

A few times in the park, we’d get pushed off the field into a nook between the swings and the fence in the playground–about 20 ft x 5 ft. Most people would get stuck–a tiny canal, barely enough space to ginga. Not this guy. A rapid scan, and a creative rush from a new challenge, new choreography, new angles. A minute later, we’re off, a whole new repertoire of movement to meet the space, absolutely exhilarating. He incorporated the swingset. Another lego piece, another poetry phrase, another piece of clay for him.

Then there was the day he couldn’t put any pressure on his finger. No rolês, no ground transitions, no cartwheels.

The look. A scan of the room.

Like Jay Z’s notorious decades of songs written without a pen, a whole series just poured out of him. The only informal rule, made 5 mins ago, was no fingers (a tall order in capoeira). Everyone exuberant. So different, so energizing–complex and beautiful as always.

Any disruption, tiny or huge, is an accelerant for this guy’s creative imagination. What a way to live.

Hard to keep up with sometimes, but always trying.

This past Monday, the door opened, his hand cupped his lower back. The look. The scan.

He grabbed a light saber looking toy. Esquivas! The light saber for fun, focus, something different to carry the energy. He was in pain. Take it easy, we said. This alchemy is his first language. Another celebration out of thin air. His making. Our collective.

I’ve learned so much over the years from this guy, this group, this practice. The magic and terror and energy of working with whatever is happening, knowing it’ll keep changing.

Collapse and world-making always twinning

Another new chapter starting soon. In April, we’re moving to a studio Bed Stuy. Hope you’ll come train. Cheers to what's next 🎉🔥 by @bk_undergreen

Whatever ends the worst of this genocide cannot come quickly enough. What relief & joy watching Gazan journalists, kids, doctors, people & their families near and far see news of an impending ceasefire. They must be so very tired.

We will carry the burden of these atrocities our entire lives--how we resourced them with our taxes & weapons, our avoidance & narratives, our 'waiting it out', our inability to humanize life when spoken in Arabic, our silence in workplaces & community spaces, our daily scrolling. Our students, children, neighbors and friends will continue to ask, for many years, why and how and who we were these past 16 months, over the several decades that led up to them. As they should.

We will speak often & regularly about the relentlessness of Bisan Owda & Noura Erakat & Motaz Azaiza & Dr. Hussam Abu Safiyah and the thousands of names we've yet to learn (by we, I mean I) whose mutual aid, memories, lost neighborhoods & universities, and whose poetry kept Palestinian life & humanity amplified amidst accelerated efforts toward its erasure. We will relearn Palestinian life in Rafah & Jabalia as their inhabitants collectively confront the weight of what comes next, on their own terms (no doubt w/ plenty of geopolitical haggling).

Israeli civilians that have been killed, taken hostage, and the society/families around them advocating for their release have already begun an accelerated reckoning with the occupation that created conditions for their becoming pawns toward a long overdue Palestinian freedom, and the many instances in which their government declined deals for their release in service of an endless program of territorial destruction, flattening, and expansion while the clock toward the US election kept ticking. Accountability for the crimes of the Israeli government, military, and occupation-and its patron, the US-will be the subject of memory, int'l law, and redress for decades to come. What a grotesque reality. Shame.

Until freedom & liberation for all Palestinians--with relief that maybe this means some rest for those who have been starved, evaporated, bombed out of their homes during this horrific, livestreamed, gamified, genocide by @bk_undergreen
