And just like that, it’s been about 3 years since I’ve posted to this dear sweet page of mine. Turns out a medical residency isn’t exactly conducive to maintaining a consistent online creative presence. Alas! I’ve got a lot to share with y’all from the past few years, and look forward to re-entering this space as I shift back into a 40-hour work week come this summer. In the meantime, I’ve had the honor of providing illustrations for my dear friend and generational talent Maggie Pahos’s brilliant substack, @good_slash_grief . Maggie captures life’s beautiful, joyful, aching moments unlike anyone I know. And she somehow puts this stuff out like every week. It’s mind boggling. What a joy to pair her work with some sweet illustrations — and more to come with each week! Hope you enjoy as much as I have. Love, BK (Gorgeous logo designed by my brilliant creative partner / soon-to-be irl husband @artbyajbk ) by @bkcartoons
I am used to thinking of my body as a source of physical pain and emotional distress. I’ve lived with chronic back pain for over a decade, in addition to some pretty not-great body image issues. My frustration with my body —anyone’s frustration with their body, for that matter — is valid. It is a product of very real experiences, and it is nothing to be ashamed of. But it’s also important for me to remind myself on a regular basis that I deserve to love my body, to treat it as well as possible, and to thank it for what it’s capable of doing. Even on my worst day, my body shows up, and that is enough. __ . . . . #illustration #illustrationartists #illustrator #instaart #drawingoftheday #artistsofinstagram #artwork #characterdesign #drawsomething #illustrate #graphicdesign #cartoon #cartoonist #cartoonistsofinstagram #illustratorsoninstagram #doodle #doodleoftheday #selfcare #anxiety #depression #mentalhealth #wellness #procreate #digitalillustration #sketch #sketchbook #coloredpencil #artoftheday #yoga #dailypractice by @bkcartoons

Today is my first day seeing my own patients as a resident physician. I won’t lie, the imposter syndrome is real this morning — I can’t wrap my head around the concept of a real, actual human being calling me their doctor. But, as I said to myself in the mirror this morning, I will project confidence like it’s my job. I hope that whatever your job is this morning, professional or personal, at home or in the office, alone or with others, internal or external, you choose to project confidence, too. __ Posts will likely be less frequent over the coming months, friends, but I will do my best to keep you updated on this journey, and check in with y’all, as well! __ . . . . #illustration #illustrationartists #illustrator #instaart #drawingoftheday #artistsofinstagram #artwork #characterdesign #drawsomething #illustrate #graphicdesign #cartoon #cartoonist #cartoonistsofinstagram #illustratorsoninstagram #doodle #doodleoftheday #selfcare #anxiety #depression #mentalhealth #wellness #procreate #digitalillustration #sketch #sketchbook #coloredpencil #artoftheday by @bkcartoons
Me when I feel like a terrible monster but then I explain to my friends how I’m feeling and they’re kind and patient and validating and tell me I’m a good person and that it’s ok to feel angry and sad sometimes 🤘 __ . . . . #illustration #illustrationartists #illustrator #instaart #drawingoftheday #artistsofinstagram #artwork #characterdesign #drawsomething #illustrate #graphicdesign #cartoon #cartoonist #cartoonistsofinstagram #illustratorsoninstagram #doodle #doodleoftheday #selfcare #anxiety #depression #mentalhealth #wellness #procreate #digitalillustration #sketch #sketchbook #coloredpencil #artoftheday by @bkcartoons

You can only carry so much weight alone. Momentum is important, but so is pausing and allowing yourself to feel and express your emotions. A huge part of my late 20s has been finding spaces and people with whom I feel safe letting it all out. __ . . . . #illustration #illustrationartists #illustrator #instaart #drawingoftheday #artistsofinstagram #artwork #characterdesign #drawsomething #illustrate #graphicdesign #cartoon #cartoonist #cartoonistsofinstagram #illustratorsoninstagram #doodle #doodleoftheday #selfcare #anxiety #depression #mentalhealth #wellness #procreate #digitalillustration #sketch #sketchbook #coloredpencil #artoftheday #crying by @bkcartoons

One year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 500,000 lives lost. We are exhausted, traumatized, and scared. But, particularly over the past month or so, I have started to feel hope again. I wanted to find a caption for each of these panels to reflect where we’ve been, and where I hope we’re going. But I couldn’t do it. So I present this to you, my friends, and ask you to fill in the blanks yourselves. What gives you hope today? What keeps you looking up? __ __ . . . . #illustration #illustrationartists #illustrator #instaart #drawingoftheday #artistsofinstagram #artwork #characterdesign #drawsomething #illustrate #graphicdesign #cartoon #cartoonist #cartoonistsofinstagram #illustratorsoninstagram #doodle #doodleoftheday #selfcare #anxiety #depression #mentalhealth #wellness #procreate #digitalillustration #sketch #sketchbook #coloredpencil #artoftheday by @bkcartoons
