..to play with food, in the end, is not an act of disobedience. It’s a way of learning - of looking at the structures we inhabit, both social and spatial, and gently twisting them to see what else they could become.

This week we turn to Blanka Major, born 1994, finalist in the Architecture category. Her practice moves across architecture, cooking, writing, curating and research, approaching these fields as interconnected ways of paying attention to how we inhabit and relate to space. She begins with the body, its movements, rhythms and sensitivities, and extends her work toward the infrastructures that shape everyday life, from housing to food systems. Through installations, performative dinners and spatial interventions, she explores how public and intimate realms overlap, framing architecture as both a material and social practice. Working with an experimental and open approach, she engages existing environments as living landscapes, amplifying their textures, habits and frictions rather than imposing fixed forms. In this perspective, design becomes a form of care, creating flexible frameworks that allow for shared experiences, negotiation and the unpredictable dynamics of collective life.

Proposal, May26

BE MY GUEST — 1/3: MAKING

How can cooking become a way of making architecture?

For my proposal Be My Guest for this year’s @swissartawards in architecture, I wanted to bring processes of cooking and architectural model-making together.

Experimenting with bioplastics made from apple waste, orange peels and beetroot, alongside textiles, membranes and other soft materials to bring infrastructure closer to touch, skin, and the human scale. Mixing, heating, casting, drying, sewing and assembling — moving back and forth between the kitchen and the workshop.

A lot of trial and error, failed recipes, unexpected textures and discoveries along the way. Testing how food could become an architectural material, and how these small experiments might translate to a 1:1 scale.

At the heart of it was a simple question: how light, soft and adaptable could an infrastructure for cooking become? And how might it create space for gathering, sharing and encounter?

Four kitchens, fourteen people, one recipe passed on in Sarajevo.

For Blanka’s Zeljanica, Anthony Zackery Butcher (@anthonyzbutcher)and Blanka Major (@bla_nka) gathered friends and collaborators in Zürich, Vienna and Munich to cook together across a screen. Dough was kneaded, stretched and rolled into spirals; kitchens grew messy, and strangers became companions.

The evening opened a conversation about food as an architectural material, and about practices that move between cooking, spatial design, performance and care. In Blanka’s work, the kitchen table becomes an infrastructure for participation: a familiar place where barriers soften, knowledge circulates and collective action can take shape.

What began as a shared recipe became a temporary room spanning three cities, built through gestures, conversation and the simple act of making dinner together.

What the air holds,
What the soil remembers.

During Ponto d’Orvalho, @bla_nka created a woven surface suspended among the trees, where the movement of the wind met sound, clay, and food. Something was buried. Something floated. The body remained between these two gestures. Touch was central. So was the shared food. Thank you, Blanka, for inviting us to inhabit this place differently, suspended between earth and sky.

Thank you to @martacypel for the beautiful ceramics and @whynotsoda for the contribution to this special moment at sunset.

—

First glimpses from last weekend, through the lens of @renatomchorao. Our deep gratitude for the level of receptivity and unity we experienced during these glowing days. We felt the soft power of inhabiting a festival, a forest, a meal. We are grateful also for the gestures that brought together artists, chefs, farmers and specialists of this edition around processes and moments of commensality, community and rural life. 𓆈

Thank you for accepting our invitation to synchronize with the rhythms of place, and for making this festival your own. See you in May 2027, for the continuation of a cycle that began now, in such a loving way.

A taste of Pálás an Phobail 💚

Last Friday, something different happened at Festival Printworks Gallery.

Pálás an Phobail — tasting a sense of place, created by Blanka Major (@bla_nka) & Hinterland (@hinterlandgalway) as part of Culture Night Late (@culturenight), transformed the gallery into a People’s Palace: an edible, sensory space where food became a way to reconnect with people, stories and place.

Moving through a series of spaces and sensory encounters, they invited us to explore the connections between food, landscape and memory and to taste a sense of place.

From familiar flavours to new encounters, the night brought people together around a shared table and offered a different way of experiencing togetherness, one that felt both deeply rooted and completely new.

A night to remember.

Thank you to everyone who contributed, and everyone who came, shared, listened and made the night what it was. A night about food, place and belonging, and the many ways we come together.

💚

Food as culture.

Tonight we gathered at the Pálás an Phobail as part of @culture_galway to think about how we might rethink our places and spaces and what happens when we look at them through food.

@bla_nka map gave us a starting point: a way of seeing the city through the places where food is grown, shared, prepared, exchanged and eaten and through the relationships, memories and possibilities held within those spaces.

From there, the conversation opened out. What does food tell us about a place? Who gets to use our spaces, and who gets to shape them? What could happen if food, sharing and community were given a more central place in how we imagine our city?

A huge thank you to Blanka, for bringing her work, curiosity and perspective to the evening, and to Professor Anna Davies, TCD and Michael Higgins @bohs_climatecoop for joining the conversation and helping us think beyond food as simply something we consume, towards food as a way of creating connection, belonging and community.

And thank you to everyone who came, listened, questioned, ate, talked and shared the space with us.

It felt like a really special evening and a reminder that sometimes rethinking a place starts simply by gathering people around a table.

Thank you to Frank and the whole @archattheedge team for bringing us together and to everyone who helped make Pálás an Phobail - Tasting a Sense of Place happen: @franniejeffers Oisin @leafandroot Thalli Foods Mike and his oysters @micildistillery @biainnovator kitchens @artscouncilireland @galwaycitycouncil

Pálás an Phobail — tasting a sense of place
by Blanka Major + Hinterland

#AATE26 Interactive Exhibition + Creative Workshop + Artist Talk

What makes us belong to a place?

For Culture Night Late, Architecture at the Edge is collaborating with architect, artist and curator Blanka Major and Hinterland to explore the connections between food, people and place.

At the heart of the evening is Pálás an Phobail — a “People’s Palace” — an edible installation where gathering, eating, listening and exchanging ideas come together around a shared table. Moving through a series of spaces and sensory encounters, the evening explores how food connects us to landscape, memory and belonging.

As part of Culture Night Late, the evening unfolds across Galway through a series of connected experiences: an outdoor installation on Druid Lane, a Ceremonial Tea at The Mick Lally Theatre, followed by Pálás an Phobail at Festival Printworks Gallery, and culminating at The Mick Lally Theatre with Cathedral AKA Shampain.
