Who is Black in Wild made for? Is it only for Black people?

Black in Wild is about creating community. Taking up space to authentically show up as you are in places or during activities outside that bring you joy. It’s for anyone who’s ever felt like they don’t belong.

The reason why the podcast is called Black in Wild is because it’s a podcast created and hosted by a black woman who recreates in the outdoors. It’s me, it’s my podcast, and it’s my community. I created BIW so that others don’t feel the way I feel sometimes in the outdoors. It’s for me when I started recreating outdoors but didn’t always see myself represented or feel welcome in certain spaces.

While you wait to see/listen to episode 4, check out the short film “Heat in the Barrio” that Victor worked on. The film is available on YouTube. https://youtu.be/j94k_Oq3YJw?is=dyqmm8UI104ao9JI

“A 9 minute short film directed by José Esteban Ubaya. It follows children Maribel and Jorge on their walk to school as a zoot-suit-wearing Pachuco follows them, exploring community and climate issues. The project is a collaboration between CSUN Chicano/a Studies Department and Rutgers University, and was featured in the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival.”

Did you know? In 2022, only about 2% of organic farm operators identified as Hispanic, and less than 1% identified as Black, Asian, or other minorities, according to the USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture and industry reports.

Check out episode 2 to hear more about representation and organic farming with Jennifer Núñez 🎧🎙️

Land acknowledgment is great and all but you can’t just stop there. Actions must speak louder than words.

Loved this whole conversation with Victor! It was great to hear about the work he is doing to document the stories of POC’s and the environment.

Mark your calendars for Monday, October 19 5pm PST for episode 4! 🎧🎙️

Lovely fall hike the other day! Shins are still in recovery. Thankfully they felt okay while I was walking. Experienced some soreness after though! Beautiful fall colors 😍🍂🍁

Did you know? That only 1.5% of USA Climbing members and affiliates identified as African American as of February 2024. 🧗🏽

Do you think this number is still representative of black climbers in the US? 🧗🏽

“The best part of climbing for me was the adventure of figuring it out...not being concerned with the results or the stats.” - Nate Pierce (on one of the draws of climbing) 🏞️🧗🏽

One big take away that I’ve gained from recreating outdoors: how to push past my “limits.” And tips on how others can too: practice!
