Can a place really change you… or does it simply reveal who you've been all along?

Some people move abroad looking for adventure.

Others are searching for peace.

Community.

A slower pace.

Or maybe just the chance to become someone they've been afraid to be.

This documentary isn't about one city.

It's about the moments that make people believe a different life is possible.

JUNETEENTH FREEDOM DAY

Today we honor the strength, resilience, and triumph of a people who never gave up on freedom. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved african americans in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom - two years after the emancipation proclamation.

Let Us Remember.
Let Us Reflect.
Let Us Celebrate.

Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough!!

Black Mérida and Black Cinema Colectivo partnered up to take over the theater for a private group screening of “Michael”!

It was beautiful seeing a theater full of Black faces singing, clapping, and dancing along to the hits we all know and love. And of course we were talking back to the screen 🤭. No one does it like us! taken in Mérida, Yucatan by @black.merida

As the temperatures rise and we prepare for what the news is saying will be a scorching summer, we want to remind you of a few useful pointers:

1. Stay Inside - staying out of the sun and heat is the simplest way to stay cool. Stay inside during peak temps (11am-4pm). Run your errands after sundown. Exercise outside early (5-7am) or late (6-9pm). Order it to be delivered.

2. If you must go outside- wear flowing natural fabrics that breathe. Consider bringing a hat, sun umbrella or a fan and a cold bottle of water.

3. Power outages- The heat and increased strain on the grid tend to happen in Mérida when the temps start to rise. It will happen to you at some point. Stay ready so you dont have to get ready! (Post about this coming soon).

4. Maintain you air conditioners- This is important for the health of your machines, the health of everyone in your household and your wallets. Keeping curtains and shades closed during the day can also help keep your house cool and reduce strain on your air conditioners.

5. Stay hydrated- even when you don’t feel thirsty, drink water, consume water dense fruits (like watermelon) or fruits with natural electrolytes (like citrus) and drink beverages with added electrolytes to help rehydrate your body.

Bonus: Stay positive- a lot of weathering Mérida heat is about your mentality! You can do it! taken in Mérida, Yucatan by @black.merida
