Black Arts MKE was honored to join our arts community for UPAF’s 2026 Funding Day!

We’re grateful to the United Performing Arts Fund for its continued investment in Milwaukee’s performing arts community and for creating opportunities for organizations like ours to continue uplifting artists, sharing culturally rich stories, and creating meaningful experiences for our city.

Our Artistic Director, Dimonte Henning, had the opportunity to represent Black Arts MKE and share in a morning centered on community, celebration, and the continued impact of the performing arts throughout Milwaukee.

Thank you to UPAF, its supporters, fellow arts organizations, and everyone who continues to champion the work happening across our creative community. We’re proud to be part of it and excited for what’s ahead.

Congratulations on a successful 2026 campaign—and cheers to UPAF’s 60th Anniversary Campaign in 2027!

A NEW CHAPTER FOR BLACK ARTS MKE.

We’re proud to welcome Dimonte Henning as the new Artistic Director of Black Arts MKE, beginning with our 2027–28 season.

A Milwaukee-based actor, director, producer, and theatre arts educator, Dimonte brings nearly 20 years of experience, a deep commitment to Black theatre, and a passion for developing the next generation of artists.

This new chapter represents growth — expanding our theatrical programming, creating more opportunities for local talent, developing new work, strengthening arts education, and continuing to build spaces where Black stories, Black artists, and Black audiences can thrive.

We’re excited for what’s ahead and proud to continue building the future of Black arts and theatre right here in Milwaukee.

Today, we celebrate National Black Theater Day.

Black theater is more than what happens on a stage. It is where our stories are protected, our voices are amplified, our history is remembered, and our communities get to see themselves fully reflected.

Standing in front of just a few of the productions that have been brought to life through Black Arts MKE reminds us of the stories we’ve told, the artists who have shared their gifts, and the impact this work continues to have in Milwaukee.

Today, we’re sharing a few thoughts on why Black theater matters to us—and highlighting some of the productions that have stayed with us along the way.

Here’s to the actors, directors, playwrights, designers, technicians, producers, audiences, and every person who keeps Black theater alive.

Happy National Black Theater Day from Black Arts MKE and the Milwaukee Black Theater Festival.

Our stories deserve the stage. To continue sharing these stories please donate at www.blackartsmke.org/donate/ by @blackartsmke

THE MERGE is an honest and engaging conversation exploring the relationship between film and theatre — two industries that often share the same artists, storytellers, and creative skills, but operate in very different ways.

Through a panel of creatives with experiences ranging from acting and auditioning to producing, developing original work, and working behind the scenes, THE MERGE will examine what it actually looks like to build a career across both industries.

The conversation is rooted in Milwaukee, but it is not limited by Milwaukee.

We’d love to have you !! And it’s FREE - RSVP

Some moments are bigger than theatre. They are history meeting the present.

This weekend, we had the extraordinary honor of welcoming the families and loved ones of two of Milwaukee’s most monumental figures, Vel Phillips and Father James Groppi, to experience Vel & Groppi: In the Deep Tracks.

These were two people who stood together, marched together, challenged injustice together, and helped move Milwaukee forward during the fight for fair housing and civil rights. Their courage was not simply something written into history books—it changed lives, opened doors, challenged systems, and helped shape the Milwaukee we know today.

To have Margaret “Peggy” Rozga, Father Groppi’s wife, alongside representatives of the Phillips family, in the room as their stories were brought to life on stage was incredibly powerful.

We were honored to recognize them with a token of appreciation—not only for the legacies of Vel Phillips and Father Groppi, but for the families, loved ones, organizers, advocates, and communities who stood beside them and carried this work forward.

There is something deeply moving about watching history come alive while the people who lived it, loved it, and inherited its legacy are sitting among us.

This is why we tell our stories.
This is why we preserve our history.
This is why theatre matters.

Milwaukee is better because Vel Phillips and Father James Groppi had the courage to stand up, speak out, march forward, and demand something better.

Their footsteps are still here.
Their voices still echo.
Their work still matters.

And it was our honor to say, simply and sincerely:

Thank you. We remember. We honor you. We carry it forward.

Bring your family. Bring a friend. Bring the next generation. Come witness a story about courage, community, partnership, and the people who helped change Milwaukee.

GET YOUR TICKETS NOW.
Performances continue through August 29, 2026.
