The War on Paperclips
Metal paperclips are detrimental to archival paper. Over time, paperclips oxidize, leaving rust stains on paper and causes the paper to break down and become affixed to the other pages its attached to.
Whats the answer?
An alternative solution that has its own controversy are plastic paperclips. Plastic paperclips do not oxidize or leave rust stains, but they still bend and fold papers.

The pile grew over several hours on Monday! All the material was rehoused into acid free folders and this pile was tossed.

Came across some snarky photos while doing some late night archival work… all the speech bubbles were added by whoever was in possession of the collection prior to it being donated.

Sometimes you have to be creative... The framed photo was found amongst a collection. Before it was put in its temporary housing, additionally housing was needed to prevent future archivists from getting cut when rehousing the item. Unfortunately the plastic bags I had were too small. To make it work, I cut the sides of two bags and closed one along the sealed end and slid the photo in on the side I had cut.
The photo was flipped upside down and once again the second bag was closed along the seal end and the bagged photo was placed in the second bag along the side where the bag was cut. This allows the framed photo to be fully encased in the bags. by @blackcatarchival

Archival work is all about preservation and accessibility. Doing each step a certain way ensures that those goals are fulfilled. For example, when housing in oversize folders it’s best to place the resources in the folder and label along the opening rather than the fold so the material can be easily viewed without the removal of the entire folder from a cabinet.

Peter J. McGuire was born in New York on July 6, 1852 and died in Camden, NJ on February 18, 1906. McGuire founded the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America and Labor Day. In 1882, he proposed that a parade be held on the first Monday of September at a New York Central Labor Union meeting. The parade was held annually and adopted by other cities with Congress adopting it in 1894.

It’s been a minute since I have shared an update on the Woodruff Collection and the New Indigenous Museum. We are in the homestretch for packing. There are still quite a number of items that still need to be cleaned, but that number is dwindling quickly.
-
The material was placed in a container of 70% rubbing alcohol, then gently brushed with a toothbrush before being placed in a bin of water. The resources were then laid out to dry for a couple days.The cleaning was necessary due the material being exposed to mold.
The items were unearthed in various areas in Cumberland County and belonged to the Lenni Lenape who are still active, exist, and are recognized by the state of New Jersey. by @blackcatarchival

1. The missing piece was retrieved from the pages.
2. Gently unfolded the edges.
3. Aligned the missing section with page
4. Cut a piece of archival grade plastic sleeve to temporarily hold the paper together in that area.
5. Was rehoused in a folder.
