Today we look back at FWD>>: Lauren Martin has launched a book that’s an essential document of the roots of dubstep: @aftershock_book Pre order to support! “It all starts in the club” - @lewiselb In 2001 I got the tube to Tottenham Court Road and, far too early for the stush garage crowd, walked into a night that would change music & global culture. There was no one there; in years there would be. The first two images you see here are high res scans for Lauren’s book of my FWD>> members card, made for me by the cofounder & imo the most likely inventor of the word “dubstep” @neil_jolliffe . “1010” not “10” - a mix of ambition & “fake it until you make it”.It wasn’t obvious to me at the time, but by making that card he’d drawn a direct lineage back to the Paradise Garage, the NYC venue that gives garage its name.He was drawing a line back to go forward. Today we look back again: and here’s why…Music happens every day, but only very rarely are there moments that make & shape history. And then… they are gone, leaving only memories, legacy but also sometimes artefacts. They need documenting: Lauren has done this. From the moment I heard about this book in 2024, I felt a very deep motivation to help Lauren however I could - yes… even going to south London 😉So in the book you’ll find, amongst many incredible shots by folk like @drumzofthesouth @version111a , some never seen before artefacts of my “ar-chive” ( ©️ @joenicedj dad) like FWD>> flyers pre Plastic People or the hand written CDr from @skreamizm & @plastician The beautiful full circle is its coming out on @velocitypress aka my Deuce mag editor Colin circa 2004, the only person to give me a full time job in music journalism but also he who helped me publish the first ever @maladmz & @coki_dmz interview ever & more. Shout to @chantellefiddy my grime journo sis back then. by @blackdownkeysound

😢 Absolute tear jerker: @kraftwerkofficial pay tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto playing a cover of “Goodbye Mr Lawrence”😍 Then they rolled through more of their hits: “Tour De France,” “The Robots”, “Trans Europe Express” & “Radioactivity”. 📡 Detroit got a mention too! by @blackdownkeysound

Recently I was trying to help someone learn to mix. But how? Yes “teaching through doing” generally works. But teaching someone how to mix while mixing is confusing: you only need 1% of the buttons, everything is happening fast & you don’t know what details to listen out for.So while attempting to help someone learn from scratch, I made this to simplify: thought I’d share it with you lot.
