The 4th annual #FREEDOOMCOOKOUT was a beautiful celebration because of our #community!

There were SO MANY events this weekend between Juneteenth, Father’s Day and the World Cup. And still, over 600 of y’all came through to show love and be in community with us 🖤🤎

We’d first like to thank our partners @blackgirlassembly and @shirley_eustis_house for 4 years of producing something wonderful for the people of Roxbury and beyond 🫂.

To our volunteers who hold it down year after year—you’re our most valuable asset because the day cannot happen without y’all ✨.

Shout out to @bostoncyclistsunion for the Juneteenth Bike Ride … Y’ALL ROLLED DEEP!! It’s was a beautiful sight to see 😍.

To our vendors, host, performers, @jacesspacebos and community resource participants—THANK YOU for showing up and creating an amazing experience for our attendees 🪩.

Last but not least, thank you to @repchynahtyler for the citations given to @blackgirlassembly and @blackbrownboston and recognizing all of the work that goes into putting this together year after year 🏆.

We’re already working on something big for year 5 in 2027.

Thank you again! All of the photos will be posted in a FB album, so please check FB for the full gallery 📸

The 4th Annual Freedom Cookout happened because two women decided that “we don’t have the budget” was not going to be the reason Black families in Roxbury didn’t have a Juneteenth celebration.

This year Vania and I paid out of pocket to make this happen. No sponsor coming through at the last minute. No grant check that arrived on time. Just two people who believe in this community enough to bet on it with their own money and their own time.

That is not a complaint. That is context.

Because when the Massachusetts House of Representatives presents Black Girl Assembly and Black Brown Boston with a citation for our work highlighting the culture and communities of Boston and uplifting Juneteenth, it lands different when you know what it cost to get there. Recognition means something in a world that will extract everything you have and offer a clap in return. We are grateful for this one. Genuinely.

Thank you to every person who showed up, volunteered, shared, and celebrated with us. You are why we keep going.

We are still raising money so that next year we are not doing this from our own pockets. If this event fed your spirit, please feed this fund.

Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day.

Black and Indigenous histories in this country are tied together: shared land, shared resistance, shared families. Many Black girls in our community carry Afro-Indigenous roots, and some are still learning those stories from their elders.

Today, do two things:
1. Look up whose land your school or home sits on. In Boston, that is the homeland of the Massachusett people.
2. Ask an elder in your family what they know about where we come from. Write it down.

Share what you learn in the comments. History is leadership homework.

Everybody wants the highlight bucket. The girls who win are the ones who also protect what matters.

Your peace. Your grades. Your friendships. Your boundaries. That is your defense, and you get to guard it. by @blackgirlassembly

One of the hardest lessons you’ll ever learn is that love isn’t just something people say. It’s something they consistently serve.

We spend so much time trying to earn seats at tables that stopped feeding us a long time ago. Relationships. Friendships. Jobs. Communities. Even versions of ourselves.

Leaving isn’t failure. It’s refusing to starve while convincing yourself you’re being loyal.

And here’s the part people don’t like to say out loud: sometimes the most loving thing you can do is get up without making a scene. No final speech. No desperate attempt to be understood. Just… leave.

There are tables where you’ll never have to beg for a meal.

Save your appetite for those. by @blackgirlassembly

I’m honored to share that I’ve been selected as a Visionaries V-List 200 Honoree, recognizing women entrepreneurs who are building businesses with integrity, leading with purpose, and putting people before profit.

As someone who has spent years building community, creating spaces where Black girls and women can heal and lead, and believing that success means bringing others with you, this recognition means a great deal.

Entrepreneurship isn’t just about revenue. It’s about values. It’s about deciding, over and over again, to build something that serves people, even when it’s harder, slower, or less glamorous. That’s the kind of work I’ve always wanted to do.

This recognition also belongs to every person who has believed in the vision, volunteered their time, donated, partnered with us, attended an event, trusted us with their daughters, or simply cheered us on from the sidelines. You are part of this story.

As we celebrate this milestone, the work continues. Right now, we’re preparing for our LeadHers in Bloom and LeadHers in Action summer cohorts at Black Girl Assembly, and we’re still raising funds to ensure every girl has the resources, experiences, and support she deserves.

If you’d like to celebrate this honor by investing in the next generation of Black girl leaders, I’d be incredibly grateful for your support. You can donate at givebutter.com/black-girl-assembly. Applications for both programs are also still open if you know a young person who would benefit from joining us this summer.

Thank you to Visionaries for this incredible honor, and thank you to everyone who continues to believe in this work. I’m grateful to stand alongside so many women proving that business can be both successful and deeply human.

We’re just getting started. 💜

Black girls are not future leaders. They are leaders now.

LeadHers in Action is a youth internship experience for Black girls ages 16+ who are ready to build real-world skills, strengthen their voice, and create meaningful change in their communities.

Through mentorship, hands-on projects, field trips, leadership development, and community impact work, participants will be supported as they explore who they are, what they care about, and how they want to lead.

This is about more than a program. It is about access. Confidence. Practice. Purpose. And putting our girls in rooms where they belong.

Applications are open now but they close tomorrow at 8PM ET.
