Snuck up on a Radjah Shellduck | Burdekin Duck hiding in the shadows of a swamp in the Botanic Gardens. He got quite a fright when he realised I was standing right in front of him.

Snuck up on a beautiful Double-crested Cormorant fishing from a bridge. This is a "where did this guy come from" look, just before panic diving into the water. The blue piercing eye was something I've wanted to photograph for years.

When I was young kid in the 70's, I participated in an experimental and (later) much debated curriculum that included watching a TV series called MACOS - Man: A Course Of Study. Unbeknownst to me - the objective of the social science experiment revolved around "spiral curriculum" - suggesting that the process of repetition would enable a child to absorb more complex ideas easily. Whilst the point of the course was not about the content, I had always been interested in animals and MACOS was a pivotal moment leading to complete fascination of everything in the wild. First I wanted to become a vet, then a marine biologist, until my teenage ways led to a lifelong career in the music industry (a story for some other time perhaps). I remember coming to the realisation that the behavioural traits of animals were so closely connected to human behaviour - framing man as an animal so to speak. One of the featured animals was the Herring Gull, an ideal subject by which to differentiate learned vs innate behaviour. That documentary has stayed with me for all these years. Almost half a century later I was finally able to photograph Herring Gulls on a recent trip to California. The Herring Gull continues to fascinate me. For all I learnt about it at school and now the challenge of trying to get a dark edit right as it bounces off of the contrast of an impossible subject. Definitely more learned than innate behaviour required to solve this more recent puzzle. Will get there one day.
