Crows have never just been crows.

In British folklore, they have long occupied the border between worlds — associated with prophecy, death, memory and transformation. Their presence could be an omen, a warning, or a sign that something unseen was close at hand.

They can represent the boundary between life and death, fate, and protection. I felt like both our scarecrow and the birds were protecting us during the wonderful shoot.

Some of the birds in these images were our companions on set. Others were added later through VFX by the incredible @laurence_parkin_vfx !

But throughout the film, birds became an important part of its visual language.

Thankfully, our own encounters with them were much less ominous! There was something rather magical about being out there together, watching the birds come and go around us while we made this film. Looking back at these images now brings back so many happy memories of the shoot, the people who made it possible, and the world we got to inhabit for a little while. And it makes me so grateful for the incredible VFX work by Laurence!

There’s something about a sunset that has always made me a little sad.

Perhaps it’s because they’re so fleeting. Every evening, something completely new appears in the sky, stays for a few minutes, and then is gone forever. No two are ever quite the same. There’s a strange sort of grief in that impermanent beauty — knowing, even as you’re looking at it, that it’s already disappearing.

As a director, that feeling is endlessly inspiring.

Filming Days Before Harvest during those last moments of daylight was one of the great joys of making the film. There’s a softness to the light as the sun begins to disappear, but also a melancholy.

Colours deepen, shadows lengthen, faces change. Everything feels briefly suspended between day and night.

And you don’t have long to capture it.

That dying light became an important part of the visual language of Days Before Harvest. There’s a wistfulness to it that felt right for the film — a world at its most beautiful at precisely the moment the light is leaving it.

These are some of the sunsets we were lucky enough to capture over the Kent countryside.

A first glimpse of our upcoming short film Days Before Harvest!

An idyllic English summer. A farmer’s wife going about her days. And, standing quietly amongst the fields, a solitary scarecrow…

We’re very excited to finally share the first teaser for the film!

Days Before Harvest is nearly complete, and we’ll soon be raising some extra funds to help us finish the final elements and take the film out onto the festival circuit. We’re aiming high with our festival run, with the hope of reaching a BAFTA-qualifying stage. Watch this space for your opportunity to support and buy the film!
