you can learn a lot about a place through its history, but sometimes the best way to understand it is through its music and movement. 🎶💃🏽

during my time in cartagena, i joined @blacklegacyexperiences to learn about champeta, a genre of music and dance deeply rooted in the city’s afro-caribbean culture and history. we learned about the origins of champeta and how music and dance have long been a form of expression, identity, and resistance.

honestly, can’t think of a better backdrop for a dance class than a hidden rooftop overlooking the city.

one of my favorite things about traveling is finding experiences that let you see a destination from a different perspective. not just checking off the sights, but learning about the culture, meeting locals, and of course, dancing your ass off along the way 🙂‍↔️🤪

🏛️ Importancia histórica
• Fue el primer pueblo libre de América.
• Lo fundaron esclavos africanos que escaparon de los españoles en el siglo XVII.
• El líder más famoso fue Benkos Biohó, quien organizó la resistencia y ayudó a crear la comunidad.

🌍 Reconocimiento cultural
• La cultura de Palenque fue declarada Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad por UNESCO en 2005.

🗣️ Lengua
• Se habla Palenquero, una lengua criolla única que mezcla:
