Starting August 5th through Labor Day, Black Men Build NC Triangle is going quiet. 🖤

No Men’s Circles. No Theory Thursdays. No social media. This is the Black Men Build NC Triangle Black Out and it’s intentional.

Guided by the principles of fast, study, fight, and train, Black August is rooted in a tradition of discipline, reflection, and internal building carried forward by our people for decades; with an essential emphasis on our political prisoners, prisoners of war, and exiles.

We’re honoring that tradition by doing the same: turning inward, strengthening our pillars, and preparing for what’s next.

This is how we build. We’ll be back after Labor Day.

While we’re offline, we encourage you to plug into the @blackmenbuild for Black August programming and with those hosting Black August programming around North Carolina this month. by @blackmenbuildnc

Since 1979, Black August has been invoked as a time of memorial and resistance. Black August is a month-long commitment to a core set of tenets that honor the revolutionary spirit of our freedom fighters—political prisoners, prisoners of war, and exiles—who have given the ultimate sacrifice.

It is not a month of celebration or a time for festivities.

It is a month focused on educating ourselves and our communities about the oppressive conditions behind the walls. During this time, the Black August tradition is to study the resistance and righteous rebellion of Black people to slavery, colonization, and genocide throughout the diaspora.

The month of August carries heavy significance in the protracted struggle for Black Liberation. The Haitian Revolution, the first successful slave revolt in the Western Hemisphere, began in the heat of August. In a moment similar to today, the Watts Rebellion was waged for several days in August, evoking the August memories of Gabriel Prosser and Nat Turner.

Black August also stands as a memorial to the assassination of George Jackson, Jonathan Jackson, W.L Nolan, James McClain, William Christmas, and Khatari Gaulden – central figures in the revolutionary prisoners’ movement that carry through to today’s call for abolition.

Still, we struggle. Still, we have political and politicized prisoners who embody a commitment to struggle that we must honor.

With careful attention, the elders of the Black August Organizing Committee and other dedicated comrades have preserved the meaning and intention of Black August. We must continue to build upon the work that has come before us. We must take ourselves more seriously, understanding we aren’t alone and remembering there are those who we cannot forget. by @blackmenbuildnc

Black Men Build seeks to prove itself through our work, our programs, and our principled ideology.

Our 9 Bars define what we are fighting for and the better world we are building.

Last week, our Theory Thursday dove into our 3rd Bar:

“The highest standard of physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, and reproductive health care. For free. For everybody. This is not merely healthcare access, but the foundational assurance of holistic wellness and bodily autonomy as a human right, essential for repairing the profound trauma inflicted by anti-Black violence.”

Join us this Thursday at 7p EST for our July Mass Call where we’ll continue the conversation on the healthcare we deserve with psychologist Dr. Sinam Ward, Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) alumni Dr. Kelvin Rojas, and reproductive justice organizer Jessica M. Roach.

This is rooted in the Southern Movement Assembly tradition and the Black Radical Tradition, this is about participatory, community-led organizing analyzing the issues we face, envisioning what change looks like, and committing to action together.
