This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Frantz Fanon, a revolutionary writer, psychiatrist, and anti-colonial political philosopher. Fanon has written some of the most influential and timeless anti-imperialist works, including Black Skin White Masks, A Dying Colonialism, and The Wretched of the Earth. We honor Fanon’s legacy, unwavering commitment to the oppressed, and impact on liberation movements across the world. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Patrice Lumumba. Called “the greatest Black man to ever walk the continent of Africa” by Malcolm X, Lumumba was a revolutionary Pan-Africanist, anti-colonialist, and the first Prime Minister of an independent Congo following 75 years of Belgian colonial rule. While Prime Minister, Lumumba was determined to remove all remnants of Western domination over the newly independent country. He understood clearly that without control over their own resources and the ability to develop on their own terms, Congo and the rest of Africa could not truly be free. Lumumba was deemed too large a threat to foreign interests in the Congo and was assassinated by Belgian and US-backed forces months after his election. We honor Lumumba’s legacy and his unwavering commitment to sovereignty and self-determination for Africa. His steadfastness in the face of western imperialism remains a guiding example to those who support a free Congo and an African continent free from foreign interference. by @blackmenbuildnyc

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz (also known as Malcolm X). Brother Malcolm was a fearless revolutionary, disciplined organizer, and uncompromising voice for Black liberation & Pan-Africanism. Many of his words remain timeless thanks to his commitment to radical political education and continuous personal transformation in the pursuit of truth. We honor Malcolm’s legacy and his enduring demand for freedom and self-determination “by any means necessary.” by @blackmenbuildnyc

The poor state of healthcare in the US is not an overlooked systemic flaw, it’s manufactured through intentional design, which is exactly why the 3rd Bar in our 9 Bar political platform calls for a completely different healthcare system. By extension this also necessitates a totally different political economy: a transition from capitalism to socialism.No matter what pocket of data you analyze it all points to the same grim conclusion - Afrikan people are disproportionately impacted. It’s a healthcare system constructed with a white supremacist framework that costs more than any other in the world but whose quality of care doesn’t match its price tag.Under capitalism healthcare has been paywalled and tied to employment, with consequences reaching far beyond the physical element. Mental health is in a state of crisis for many, especially in young Black men aged 18-24 whose suicide rates exceed that of their white counterparts for the first time in the history of its data. Bodily autonomy is still an ongoing battle for our sisters, who die at a rate of 3-4x more than white women. The trauma inflicted upon our people has compounded over time, and with no relief on the psyche, this impact has manifested itself through anxiety, stress, emotional exhaustion, and depression.Even our spiritual health was targeted due to its role as a source of strength in the fight for liberation.More than access we are fighting for the assurance of holistic wellness. A broken healthcare system that prioritizes profit over people. Corporate lobbying that has eroded the regulations aimed at keeping our foods healthy. Grind culture that has seeped into every aspect of life, offering no reprieve from stress. And a male-dominated government that still seeks to control women’s bodies through legislation. These are just some of the ways that Amerikkkan society, as constructed, fails all forms of our health. However, it doesn’t have to be like this.Join us next Thursday, July 23rd, at 7p EST for Theory Thursday as we discuss our vision for a comprehensive approach to achieving the highest standard of healthcare possible.
