Today, May 20th, is Florida’s Emancipation Day? Enslaved Black people in Florida officially learned they were free on May 20, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. On this day emancipation was enforced in the state. From Key West to Miami to West Palm Beach to Ocala to Tallahassee it was the norm in Black communities throughout Florida to throw May 20th Emancipation Day celebrations and parades in the early 1900s and still today.While many know about Juneteenth, if you’re in Florida you should also know about May 20th. Our friends @thefrolicculture are hosting a Black Miami Weekend to tap in around our history and joy kicking off Friday, head over there to lock in your spots for history tours with Black Miami-Dade and relaxing moments in community. Now in its third year, Bad Poems: Poetry of Resistance, Defiance, and Dissent returns—created by Black Miami-Dade and Maven Leadership Collective.An evening of live music and poetry honoring the courage of Black Miami voters in 1939, who resisted Klan threats to vote in record numbers. Black Miami-Dade is back at the Zine Fair this Saturday April 4th in the Design District.We will be have some new and familiar Black Miami zines for sale— from Overtown, to Josephine Baker desegregating Miami Beach to Miami’s Black Power movement…come take a piece of Miami history home with you. Come write a community poem about Miami with Black Miam-Dade and @mavenleaders. Join us at the Roots Bookstore & Market in Liberty City for a collective poetry writing workshop on Saturday, March 21st inspired by The Ballad of Sam Solomon…the poem Langston Hughes wrote about Overtown as a tribute to local Black residents who fought for their democratic right to vote in the late 1930s.Following in the literary tradition of Langston Hughes, we’ll explore how verse can hold history. What will we author about this place we call home, Miami?What histories live in our neighborhoods? What stories do we carry? What are we building? What are we resisting? What are our dreams for the future? Join us for Nature as Archive, a workshop exploring the stories plants carry and how South Florida’s landscape holds memory and history on Saturday March 14th. The MOCA Legacy Series, co-curated with Nadege Green, founder of Black Miami-Dade, is part of the 30th anniversary celebration of the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami.Participants will take part in a hands-on botanical stamping activity, using leaves and stems to create prints and art pieces. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made frequent stops in Miami to rest, recover, and strategize.
