The Monks takeover the @vamusuem: Earlier this year, in preparation for my exhibition A Clay Sermon at @whitechapelgallery, I had the pleasure of being an Emeritus Fellow in the V&A Research Institute. This institution has become an important part of my research practice in London, and it was an honor to have the Monks’ sound reverberate amongst the museum’s collection of clay artifacts, including work by Peter Voulkos and a room of cobalt and enamel based wares, largely from China.

Our presence amongst the forgotten narratives of enslaved labor and colonial exploitation was palpable and gave new meaning and context to our music.

Thank you Georgia Haseldine and the @vamuseum for making space for us to fill the halls with our sermons and for allowing the ceramic collections to play a part in our performance. by @blackmonkschicago

Today I’m feeling grateful and reflective. I couldn’t have imagined a more special closing ceremony for the Black Chapel at @serpentineuk. This project is particularly resonant for me. Black Chapel is an intervention through which different pieces of my practice are united - from architectural interventions and a deep belief in the built environment to the presence of the monastic and the meditative. From the tar paintings to the Black Monks’ experimental sacred sound and the convening of Black artists through the almost annual Black Artists Retreat.

Thank you to all who joined us yesterday and throughout the summer to celebrate the project and to honor our connections to each other. We invite you to visit the chapel one last time today.
