Two and a half years ago I came back to the Town and interviewed roughly 70 folks for a documentary I am putting together highlighting the work of the Black Dot in Oakland circa 1996 -2010. Of course I had to catch up with my good brother D’Wayne and get some words from him. As big of a celebrity as he was, he always kept it community-based and grassroots. I, like every bay area kid growing up in the 80s was a Tony Toni Toné fan. Little did I know that I would grow up to work with the man who inspired me as a teen. The Black Dot hosted our first open mic Rhyme Rituals at the Java House in 1996 a few years before D’Wayne purchased it from the original owner. Some years later we became neighbors on Wood Street in West Oakland when I purchased the house next door to his House of Music. I remember him giving us a bunch of his old studio equipment when he moved out of his studio. And then him letting our comrade Boots Riley live there on some, as Boots put it, “IOU” shit. D’Wayne was that guy. Always down to help the younger folks around him. He would also come through the Black New World Social Aid & Pleasure Club and jam with us from time to time at our weekly Electric Church jam sessions. He also shared us with his vast network of celebrities, bringing them through our after hours events to hang with the village folks when they were in town on tour or recording with him around the corner. He did so much culturally for the people of Oakland. Our Shinning Star who always stayed close to the ground. You will be greatly missed D’Wayne. But, you now have a well earned seat on the Ancestor Shrine along side all the other exalted ancestors of the Black experience. #dwaynewiggins #tonytonitone #oakland #blacknewworld #blackdotartistcollective taken in West Oakland, Oakland, California by @blacknewworld

At least a $5 donation is required to check out on eventbrite, but of course you can donate as much as you want tho😊✊🏿 —Hey Folks, The Black New World Social Aid & Pleasure Club is collaborating with Neon Films to bring an exclusive pre-screening of our longtime comrade Boots Riley’s exciting new film I LOVE BOOSTERS to New Orleans Historic Prytania Theater nine days before it hits Theaters. Wednesday, May 13th 7:30pm. Boots and the Cast won’t be in attendance at the New Orleans screening because May 13th is also the hollywood premiere , but maybe he could call in and chat with us for a bit while he’s in route to the red carpet if time permits. Eventbrite link in bio as well as the link to become a Friend of The Black New World. #blacknewworld #iloveboosters #bootsriley #filmscreening #neworleans taken in Prytania Theatre by @blacknewworld

Join Golden Feather Hunters for an evening of culture and libations as we celebrate St Joseph’s Night, The 8th Year of our Collaboration with Burial & Parleaux Breweries and LEAF International to Support the Culture of New Orleans. As some of you may know every St Joe’s Night for the past 8 years has also served as a launch party for a limited edition IPA with an image of Chief Shaka’s Suit on it. A portion of the proceeds support our on going support of the Black Carnival Traditions of New Orleans, and this year’s gathering is even more special to us as we are having it at the newly re-established Black New World Social Aid & Pleasure Club. Originally founded 20 years ago in Oakland California to reconnect the Bay Area’s Black Southern Diaspora with their Louisiana Roots while also serving as a home for Radical Forward Thinking Black Diasporic Art, Music and Spiritualities, The Black New World is now home. Located at 1800 N.Claiborne Ave. in a former auto garage, we are currently operating as a private membership society so we strongly encourage everyone who would like to be a part of our ongoing events and gatherings to become a Friend of the Black New World. The link to join is in the bio. #stjosephsnight #theblacknewworld #goldenfeatherhunters #neworleans #blackmaskingindians taken in New Orleans, Louisiana by @blacknewworld

Good People, The Black New World is back in effect. This time as a members only Social Aid & Pleasure Club in New Orleans. The Original Black New World in Oakland was years ahead of its time. And like my elder Tehuti (RIP) use to say to me all the time, “ You see the problem with you Marcel is that you’re ahead of your times, and sometimes being ahead of your times is just as bad as being behind the times. The key is to be ON TIME.” I pray that I have waited long enough finally be ON TIME😊But one thing’s for sure, now is the best time to become a friend of the Black New World. Its only $30 a month to be a part of a society of radical creatives, artists, culture bearers, cultural workers and professionals who are deeply interested in preserving and forwarding the most Radical Art, Music, Culture and Spiritualities of the Black Diaspora. Go to blacknewworld.com or Click the link in the bio to join today.✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿#friendsoftheblacknewworld #blacknewworld #neworleans #blackmaskingindians #socialaidandpleasureclub taken in New Orleans, Louisiana by @blacknewworld

Over here pouring through my Black Liberation Archives and look what I came across. The original Black News magazine. The byline was Agitate Educate Organize. This was the official communications instrument of The East cultural center in Brooklyn back in the 70s. The editorial board was Segun Shabaka, Adeyemi Bandele, Muslimah Mashariki and Msemaji Weusi. #blacknews #blknws #blm #blacknewworld by @blacknewworld
