This month in our Equity in Health series, we spotlight Dr. Fiona Anita Igwe: Founder and Director of Fionita’s Project CIC and a dedicated global health professional.

Health inequities remain a persistent challenge across the UK, with a particularly severe impact on kidney disease, where underrepresented groups face a higher risk, faster progression, and poorer outcomes.

How can we build a future where data science actively closes these gaps?

On 23rd June 2026, @kidney_research_uk is hosting a free event in London, themed Data Science for Health Equity in Kidney Disease.

This event brings together kidney researchers and data scientists to explore how data can be used to identify vulnerability earlier, improve equity in care pathways, and support better outcomes for underserved populations.

They will also be highlighting crucial insights from their 2024 report, Time to Act on Kidney Health Inequalities.

This month in our Equity in Health series, we spotlight Candice McKenzie, Founder and Director of the award-winning @wearetheackee and a kidney transplant recipient.

Working at the intersection of community advocacy and patient care, her perspective brings both professional leadership and deep lived experience to the conversation on health equity across the full journey of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).

Her insight challenges the reactive nature of current healthcare structures and how risk is communicated to underserved groups.

As she puts it:
“As a kidney transplant recipient, I have experienced firsthand the impact of late diagnosis and health inequalities when it comes to chronic kidney disease. This lived experience shapes and drives my work, to ensure that others have access to earlier intervention, better information and ultimately better outcomes.”

In this feature, she explores how a combination of structural, cultural, and systemic factors causes individuals of African Caribbean heritage to be five times more likely to develop CKD, the dangerous normalisation of high blood pressure, and how community-led organisations play a critical role in bridging the gap between healthcare systems and the populations they serve.

May is mental health awareness month, a reminder that mental health is an essential part of overall well-being.

Mental health influences how we think, feel and function in our daily lives; however, mental health challenges are not always obvious, and many people may struggle without recognising the signs or seeking support.

Conditions like anxiety, stress-related disorders and depression are not character flaws, they are medical conditions that can cause poor concentration, affect energy levels and overall quality of life, highlighting the importance of early awareness and support.

In many Black communities, mental health continues to be shaped by stigma, cultural perceptions and barriers to accessing care, which can lead to misdiagnosis and undertreated conditions.

Improving mental health outcomes requires more than awareness; it requires open conversations, equitable access to care and systems that reflect and support the needs of diverse communities.

Organisations working across mental health research, advocacy, and community support continue to play an important role in improving understanding, access to care, and outcomes, including addressing racial inequalities in mental health.

We attended the Black Health Inequities Summit this month, hosted by @ldninspire_.

A space bringing together communities, organisations and healthcare leaders to reflect on where we are, and what needs to change

One message that stayed with us from the keynote by Prof. Bola Owolabi CBE was Insight to Impact.

Because the reality is, we are not short of insight; the data exists; the disparities are well understood; and the conversations are happening.

But the gap is still in the translation

how that insight turns into action
how it is carried through systems
and whether it is actually felt in the communities most affected

For us, it reinforces something we see time and time again.

Progress is not defined by how much we know; it is defined by what we choose to do with that knowledge and, critically, who is involved in shaping and delivering that action

Because without a meaningful partnership with communities, insight risks remaining just that insight.
