Mercury Moments Magazine and Black Soil Presents: Hands Immersed in Black Soil.

Black Soil and Mercury Moments Magazine are excited to introduce to you all the final advocate featured in this article, Lawren Caldwell.🤎

Lawren Caldwell is an environmentalist who recently graduated from North Carolina A&T State University. Her master’s thesis, “An Analysis of Pro-Environmental Behaviors as Held by Undergraduate Members of Black Greek-Letter Organizations,” illustrates her desire to understand how communities address environmental challenges. As an undergraduate research assistant, she investigated issues such as food insecurity, health inequities, and environmental justice, which inspired her dedication to community health and environmental equity. She eventually worked with the North Carolina Black Alliance as an Environmental Justice fellow, where she saw the effectiveness of a grassroots organization. Now, Lawren is an agriculture education teacher, increasing representation in agricultural spaces and advocating for low-income minority communities to ensure fair treatment and meaningful participation in environmental decision-making.📚

Thank you, Lawren, and all our wonderful advocates, for the incredible work you do. You all are an inspiration to others and are so deeply needed in this field. Your voices matter, your opinions matter, and your work matters. Thank you all again!🫶🏾

Black Soil and Mercury Moments Magazine are excited to introduce our very first featured environmental justice advocate and master’s graduate Loren Caldwell, a powerful voice pushing for equity, awareness, and real change.

Loren Caldwell is an environmental advocate with a Master’s in Global Studies from UNC Chapel Hill, where her research focused on Afro-Panamanian resistance to environmental racism, particularly regarding waste. With experience working for an environmental nonprofit, Loren led efforts in trash cleanups, animal data collection, and tree planting, all aimed at fostering environmental stewardship and community involvement. Currently working in the nonprofit sector, Loren is dedicated to directly eliminating racism and economic inequity through her work with youth and women. By tackling these issues head-on, she strives to create sustainable solutions and build more equitable communities. Loren’s work sits at the crossroads of environmentalism, racial justice, and economic empowerment. Outside of her professional work, Loren enjoys spending time with loved ones, traveling, hiking, and crocheting, all while staying grounded in her commitment to sustainability and social justice.🌎

Thank you, Loren, for all your hard work and for being a part of this project with us!💚 by @blacksoil.am

Black Soil is excited to partner with Mercury Magazine to highlight the experiences of Black women in environmental science and the workforce. I reached out about this article because I wanted to share the stories of women like me, women navigating a field where we make up less than 3%, and where the journey can be complicated. Many environmental organizations welcome us as interns but rarely as employees, especially now that companies are no longer required to follow DEI policies. Still, our voices and our impact matter. Stay tuned for more details on the upcoming article. by @blacksoil.am

“Let’s the change the climate, before the climate changes us.”- Ariel Mial, Founder of Black Soil 🌎

Yesterday, November 1st, I had the incredible honor of receiving The Visionary Leadership of the Year Award at the Spirit of Excellence Awards. 🏆

I also had the privilege of giving a speech about community, perseverance, and positivity, the very things that led me to this moment. I am forever grateful for the support of my community and everyone who has believed in me along the way.

A special thank you to Jeremiah Dickerson, his grandmother, and Marcella Dickerson, the director of this event, for nominating me for this award. When I founded Black Soil, I did not have much money, only a vision, faith, and friends who believed in me. I wanted to make sure my community, the Black community, was educated about the environment because we are deeply connected to this land and deserve to thrive in it, even though we are often the ones most affected by the environmental challenges we face today. 🌿

One of my favorite quotes from my speech was:
“All people make the world go around, but Black people are the reason that it spins.”

The hate against us has fueled this country, yet through it all, we continue to rise and overcome. As I said in my speech:
“They hate us because they know we have that spirit of excellence within us. Do not ever let an oppressor steal your spirit or tell you that you are not excellent because you are Black. YOU ARE EXCELLENT BECAUSE YOU ARE BLACK.” ✊🏾

Thank you all for your love and support. Let us continue to do our part to make sure everyone can live in a healthy and thriving environment. 💚
