Fascist politics and ideologies are currently re-emerging in the context of recent political shifts and crises, both in the United States and internationally. However, as black radical and anti-colonial thinkers remind us, it is crucial to understand fascism not as a mere aberration or state of exception, but as inherent to the global development of capitalism, its production and regulation of crises, and imperialism. They further show that fascist violence is no exception to historical fascism in Europe, but deeply entangled with the ongoing projects of colonialism and settler colonialism. In this course, we will explore the tradition of radical black thinkers and their critique and struggle against fascism. In the course, we will engage with the powerful ideas and activism of (among others) C.L.R. James, Paul Robeson, Claudia Jones, W.E.B. Du Bois, Aimé Césaire, Frantz Fanon, Assata Shakur, the Black Panthers and the Black Liberation Army, as well as with contemporary anti-fascist struggles within and across the African diaspora. by @blackstudiesis

The Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen’s University is pleased to invite applications for one-year Pre-Doctoral Fellowships for Black Studies students.

The Fellowships are open to students enrolled in a PhD program and working on doctoral research in the creative arts, humanities, social sciences or natural and physical sciences at an accredited university other than Queen’s University. Candidates must have completed all doctoral degree requirements except the final doctoral project (e.g. dissertation). They will be expected to complete their doctoral project during their tenure as a Fellow to receive their degree from their home institution.

The Fellowship holder is required to relocate to Kingston while completing their research in order to teach one course in the Faculty of Arts and Science and contribute to intellectual life at Queen’s University.

Info Session: March 9 at 6PM
Applications are open. The submission deadline is March 31, 2026.
Fellowship Term: September 1, 2026 through August 31, 2027.

Do you want to understand the climate emergency and how global environmental issues transcends geopolitical borders with uneven repercussions? It’s not too late to sign up for BLCK 320: Black Studies in Transnational Contexts. This course explores race, colonialism, capitalism, and how the confluence of these socioeconomic power relations leads to inequitable distributions of environmental harms.
