Did you know? Carmen de Lavallade began her career as a ballet dancer! In 1956, she became the prima ballerina at the Metropolitan Opera, dancing in Aida and succeeding her cousin, the trailblazing Janet Collins. She also performed as a guest artist with the American Ballet Theatre (ABT), cementing her legacy in the dance world.

I had the honor of highlighting this legendary icon in my thesis, Black Swans Shattering the Glass Ceiling, and in a chapter of an upcoming book where I explore her profound impact on dance history.

While conducting my research, I discovered this rare gem: Carmen de Lavallade gracing the cover of Hue Magazine, dated June 30, 1954. Such an inspiration!
