Black Tot rum gets its name from the final naval rum ration - a day forever known as Black Tot Day.

But what is a tot, and what role did it have to play in one of the longest-running traditions in naval history?

For the past five years, our Master Blender selected exceptional rum casks from origins including Trinidad, Barbados, Guyana and Jamaica, marrying them with our perpetual reserve and the remaining original Navy rum from the surviving Black Tot flagons.

The result was a limited-edition blend that evolved with every release. Reminiscent of the traditional naval rum style, each expression is rich, robust and indulgent, creating a multi-layered rum that proves great flavour comes from great blending.

The Royal Navy didn't create a remarkable blend by accident.

Some of the standard-issue rums they were selecting from across the Caribbean and beyond are now considered some of the finest and rarest in the world, each bringing their own distinct character to the blend.

Together, they created a style of rum with extraordinary depth and complexity. At Black Tot, we bring our own ingenuity and build on this style of blending with our Master Blender's Reserve – perpetually blending the world's finest and rarest rums.

We take the best of Caribbean rum.

Blending together the delicate honeyed notes from Barbados, stone and tropical fruits from Trinidad, a rich body and depth from Guyana, and a touch of funk from Jamaica, this gives notes of ripe pineapple, vanilla fudge and toasted cinnamon.

Our vibrant blend creates bold complexity that ensures it shines in any cocktail, always prominent and never disappearing.

When our founder tasted the rum from a forgotten navy flagon for the first time, he was blown away. It had layers of sophisticated flavour, it was complex, and it was spectacular.

It was like nothing he had tasted before. It was a rum like no other.

At Black Tot Rum, this discovery led us on a hunt to track down the remaining flagons, and find out how the navy had created a rum with such depth of flavour. by @blacktotrum

No Black Tot Day. No Black Tot Rum. It is that simple.

When the naval ration ended on 31st July 1970, it didn't mark the end of an era. It sparked the beginning of ours. The discovery of the original navy flagons gave us a liquid time capsule, handing us the blueprint to completely redefine how we looked at blending and maturing rum.

This 31st July, we aren't just looking back, we are celebrating a moment in time that started it all. by @blacktotrum

For centuries, the Royal Navy believed a daily measure of rum was excellent for morale.

Less excellent, perhaps, for steering a ship.

Eventually, common sense caught up with tradition, and on 31 July 1970 the daily rum ration came to an end.

The day became known as Black Tot Day.

Black Tot Last Consignment was never meant to exist.

It began when Sukhinder Singh opened an original Royal Naval flagon and discovered a style of rum unlike anything he’d tasted before; dense with character, layered with complexity, and shaped by decades of naval blending tradition.

Most people would have treated it as a curiosity. Instead, he spent years tracking down the last remaining flagons from the Royal British Navy.

What he found was remarkable: each flagon carried subtle differences in flavour, shaped by different naval yards, blending practices, and eras of production. So he bottled this remarkable liquid as Black Tot Last Consignment, preserving one of the last true tastes of Navy Rum history.

The aroma begins with treacle, dark chocolate, super ripe black fruits and an exotic lift of leather. The palate starts thick and sweet with an oakiness before a burst of cassis. Espresso and cacao finishes with black fruits and cigar tabacco.

To most people, they're old stoneware jars.

To Laura Chilton, they're some of the most important artefacts in rum history.

Every flagon tells a story of blending, craftsmanship and flavour. By uncovering those stories, we've rediscovered the ingenuity behind Navy Rum and the inspiration behind Black Tot.

The brilliance of Navy Rum was never about a single distillery.

It came from the Navy’s willingness to blend boldly, pulling together rums from different origins to create something with greater depth and complexity.

Sometimes the best flavour comes from refusing to stay in one lane, and that pursuit of flavour didn't end with the Navy. It became Black Tot.
