AQUÍ Y ALLÁ — HERE AND THERE

Lawrence, Massachusetts has always been a city shaped by migration. Today, its identity is inseparable from its Dominican, Puerto Rican, and wider Caribbean roots.

Aquí y Allá brings together Lawrence artists Christian Rodriguez, Wilfred Acosta, Chelsea Marrero, David Santana, and Michelle Collado—all children of the diaspora whose relationships to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic come not only through heritage, but through time lived and spent on the islands themselves.

Across painting, drawing, portraiture, memory, and place, the exhibition explores what it means to create while belonging to both worlds at once. Rather than separating “here” from “there,” Aquí y Allá considers what happens when the two become part of the same lived experience.

For the first time, these five Lawrence artists come to Boston together—representing their city, their individual practices, and the cultures their families carried into it.

Immaculate Conception came, saw, and conquered. 🍆

For the past few months, 18 artists have taken one of the world’s most suggestive fruits and pushed it through religion, history, culture, humor, identity, obsession, and just about everything in between.

The show has been a huge success—and before we put the eggplants away, we’re doing it one more time.

We hope this exhibition has filled your hearts, expanded your minds, stimulated your imaginations… and filled whatever else you needed filled with eggplants. 🍆

But all good things must eventually come to an end.

So come get one last serving.

🚨BLACK WALLS GALLERY PRESENTS🚨
IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

In medieval Europe, the eggplant was feared.
Known as the “Mad Apple,” some believed it could drive you insane. Once surrounded by superstition and cultural prejudice, it eventually became one of the Mediterranean’s most celebrated foods.

It has also been used throughout history in traditional medicine and folklore, where it was believed to aid everything from fertility and childbirth to healing-a single fruit carrying countless meanings across different cultures.

For our 2nd Anniversary Exhibition, every participating artist was given the same challenge:
Create a work centered around the eggplant.
What followed wasn’t simply a collection of paintings-it became an exploration of symbolism, history, culture, religion, humor, identity, and obsession.
