Chicago is staring down a $1B budget deficit in 2025 — and many point back to one of the city’s most infamous financial moves: the 2008 parking meter deal.

Back then, city leaders leased out 75 years of parking meter revenue to a private investor group for just $1.15B upfront. At the time, it was pitched as a quick fix for a budget crisis.

But today, those same meters generate over $160M per year — money Chicago will never see. By 2024, the investors had already made their money back (and then some), while the city is stuck paying them even when meters are taken offline for construction or events.

Bloomberg once projected these meters could generate over $11.6B by the end of the lease, showing just how lopsided the deal was.

Now, with the deficit looming, the parking meter fiasco is a cautionary tale: short-term fixes can cost for generations. by @blackwealthrenaissance

At just 23 years old, Angel Reese is proving she’s a force both on and off the court. The Chicago Sky star has officially joined the ownership group for the NBL’s Brisbane Bullets in Australia. This adds to her growing sports investment portfolio which includes stakes in a pro soccer club and a women’s sports media brand.

Her goal with the organization is to spearhead the bid to bring a WNBL expansion team back to Brisbane, a move that. Would add a third team to her portfolio.

We love seeing Black athletes taking their earnings and setting themselves up for life after sports. What do you think of investing in international sports ownership? Let’s talk about it below! 🗣️👇🏾

The Trump administration is moving to overrule state laws that protect credit reports from being impacted by medical debt — a move that could hurt millions of Americans still struggling to recover from unexpected health expenses.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) had previously advanced rules to ban medical debt from credit reports, arguing that such debts often result from billing errors, insurance delays, or emergencies outside a person’s control.

Now, Trump’s CFPB is pushing in the opposite direction — asserting that federal law should preempt state-level protections, which would make it easier for debt collectors to report unpaid medical bills to credit bureaus.

With 1 in 5 Americans carrying medical debt, this policy reversal could drag thousands of credit scores down — making it harder for families to buy homes, start businesses, or access affordable loans.

Should states have the right to protect their residents from the financial fallout of medical debt? Or should the federal government set the rules for everyone? by @blackwealthrenaissance

Talia C. Teneyuque, a 32-year-old Michigan mother, is facing up to 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine for allegedly using food stamps to buy ingredients for baked goods she sold from home from January 2022 to September of 2023. She was offered a deal to plead no contest to a one-year misdemeanor count of larceny between $200 and $1,000, with a recommendation that would have likely resulted in probation that she has refused and will stand trial.

Prosecutors state she committed food stamp fraud due to USDA rules prohibiting the resale of items purchased with SNAP benefits. But let’s call it what it really is — entrepreneurship. It’s someone trying to build something legitimate out of limited resources to make some extra money.

Punishing a mom for trying to earn an honest living using her resources is criminalizing poverty without providing a meaningful or viable solution.

💭 Do you think laws like this are designed to keep people dependent instead of empowering them to build wealth?

The federal shutdown is hitting Black- and minority-owned businesses harder than most.

According to a new survey by the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) of its member firms, losses tied to the current government shutdown could climb to $400–$450 million.
Key impacts include:
• ~$150 million in contract & payment delays
• ~$125 million in reduced demand for goods and services
• ~$75 million in staffing cuts
• ~$50 million in increased borrowing costs for the firms in the survey

More than one-third of these firms say they’re already experiencing direct hits: 1 in 3 saw revenue fall sharply, projects delay or stop, and cash-flow wiped out.

If your business works with federal contracts or depends on government spending, how are you weathering this shutdown?

Critics say it’s gambling disguised as finance. Supporters argue it’s the next evolution of market-driven data.

💭 What do you think 🤔 is Kalshi the future of finance or just Wall Street’s version of DraftKings?

💍 New data from The Knot 2025 Wedding Report shows that being part of someone’s “big day” now costs more than a month’s rent for the average American.

Between travel, hotels, gifts, and outfits, the average guest spends $1,900+ attending a wedding.
Add a bachelor or bachelorette trip, and that number jumps to over $2,700 — more than the national median monthly rent ($2,100).

What used to be a celebration of love has turned into a luxury event many can’t afford. Yet, 78% of guests still say they feel “financially pressured” to attend.

Young entrepreneur Kobe Harris pitched @kobeesco.balms, an all natural, compostable lip balm focused on sustainability, made with just four ingredients (beeswax, coconut oil, sunflower oil, mango butter).

Kobe started the company in 2019 as a college student at Loyola with only $200and decided to leave school to focus on building the business after selling $15k in a single day. He continued to scale the company using TikTok/Facebook ads to $1.5M YTD with strong margins. Sharks praised the hustle; but they didn’t want to take his offer for 6% at $300k and countered at 20%, but Kobe held his value—betting on DTC growth and smart marketing.

A group of Florida homeowners has initiated a class-action lawsuit against D.R. Horton Inc. and its lending subsidiary, DHI Mortgage Co., accusing them of engaging in deceptive home-selling and financing schemes.

The lawsuit, filed on October 1, 2025, alleges that the companies orchestrated a “Monthly Payment Suppression Scheme” designed to mislead first-time homebuyers. Per the complaint, D.R. Horton enticed potential buyers by advertising low, affordable monthly mortgage payments while intentionally underestimating the required property taxes, thus concealing the true total monthly housing costs.

A striking example of this alleged scheme involves a plaintiff named Frankie Santiago. When purchasing a home in Lake County, Florida, he was quoted a monthly payment of $2,164.68. However, less than a year after closing on the home, his monthly payment surged by nearly $1,000 to $3,136.33!!

This drastic increase occurred after DHI Mortgage sold his loan to a new mortgage servicer, revealing the previously undisclosed, higher property tax obligations.

Many other homebuyers found themselves in a similar situation, discovering that their monthly payments were hundreds of dollars more than what they were initially led to believe.

The primary objectives of the lawsuit are to halt D.R. Horton’s alleged predatory practices and to secure financial compensation for the affected homeowners for all the money they have lost. The homeowners are seeking recourse under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), a federal law that targets patterns of criminal activity.

If found liable under RICO, D.R. Horton could be ordered to pay three times the amount of the homeowners’ out-of-pocket losses, representing a significant potential financial penalty for the company.
