If I Were A Poem

I’d probably start off as an incantation
weaving webs of words
magically casting spells
with charms that raised the dead

Then coming into more power
with growing tones
of heightening whispers
enchantments ever growing
through the darkened fog

Maybe I’d be a gargoyle
that became animated
when my name was called
breaking off of the castle
that was destined to fall

Maybe I’d be a foe of Cupid
who was always making others fall in love
when I would just watch
feeling stupid
barely able to feel a moment of affection
before it dies off
just hoping of a resurrection

Or maybe I’d be the words
written with Crimson blood
on the Cave walls
from hidden emotions
from unevolved Neanderthals

Maybe I’d be the symbols on the caverns
under the lighted waterfalls
repetitive chanting creating echoes
throughout the halls

I’d probably be the quote
that Maya Angelou read
when she wanted to know
why the caged bird sings
Needing the strength
To overcome all the tragic things

I could have been every recitation
by the Aztecs before a sacrifice
to bring on wealth and needed help

Or reincarnated into notes
coming through the music
of the phantom of the opera
scaring those who have not confronted
their dark side

From Martin Luther King’s dreams
to Poe’s never ending love
to Shakespeare’s comedies and tragedies
to Chaucer’s tales

I’d be visualized in the paintings
Of Monet and Van Gogh
swirling in a starry night
Or swaying flowers blooming
In the sunlight

You can now see everything
very clearer
If I were a poem
I’d be standing here right now
staring back out at you
in the mirror

If I were a poem…

Bayside tides
This the life I ride
Sipping Sangria
By the flowing waters
Windy air in the mist
Miss my friends
Blowing you a kiss
