HISTORY MADE.
On March 28, 2025, BLAC (Black Leadership Alliance Coalition) was honored with a County Proclamation by Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe, for our impact in the community—officially declaring it BLAC Day in San Diego!

This moment is more than a milestone—it’s a movement. A reflection of the power of community, culture, and the unstoppable force of young Black and “minority” leadership rising across our city. What started as a vision has become a legacy in motion.

Deepest gratitude to elected official Mariah Jameson, Vilma Poroj, and the San Diego County offices for standing with us in purpose and power.

A night to remember with leaders we won’t forget.

The revolution is being televised.

Yesterday, young Black and minority professionals answered the call to fearless leadership. Through BLAC’s EmpowerU, they are gaining the tools, confidence, and connections to break barriers and build lasting change. This is more than a program—this is the revolution.

We rise. We lead. We build.

Special thank you to our sponsors and partners:

LEADERSHIP LOOKS LIKE US. ✊🏾

Leadership is evolving, and a new generation of leaders is rising. Confident. Capable. Culturally grounded.

The numbers tell a powerful story:

📈 Black-owned employer businesses grew 62% from 2017–2023.

📈 Black women-owned employer businesses grew 78% during that same period.

📈 Racial and ethnic minority representation in Congress rose from 15% to 26% between 2005 and 2025.

Through BLAC’s leadership philosophy, we’re developing the next generation of leaders equipped to break barriers, change conditions, and shift the odds for our communities.

We’re not just preparing leaders to succeed. We’re preparing them to make others better.

Leadership is us.

It’s on us. Conditions shape the odds of success. Leaders change conditions and shift the odds.

For generations, extraordinary talent has existed in communities denied equal access to resources, opportunity, and power.

Our responsibility is not simply to succeed within these conditions. It is to CHANGE them.

To confront the lies. Develop our skills. Build economic power. Strengthen our communities. And open doors for generations to come.

At BLAC, we believe leadership is more than a title. It is the responsibility to change conditions so that others have a greater chance to thrive.

We don’t just need more successful individuals. We need more leaders building successful communities.

That’s how we change the odds.

It’s our turn.

Destroy the lie. We must eradicate the lie that Black people and communities of color are inherently inferior or less capable.

We dismantle that lie by intentionally strengthening our identity, developing our skills, and building economic power.

We reject false narratives, create opportunities, and take ownership of our own future.

BLAC isn’t just challenging the lie. We are actively building the future. A future that includes the greatness of ALL people.

All We Need Is Us.

Do people look to you for guidance, advice, or direction? Is your family counting on you to make it? Are others depending on you to lead the way?

Then leadership isn’t optional, it’s an obligation.

Here are 5 tips to become a stronger leader:

1. Know who you are.
2. Build valuable skills.
3. Never stop growing.
4. Be consistent.
5. Put your team first.

Change how we see ourselves.
Change how the world sees us.
Build the world we deserve.

WORTHY. CAPABLE. OBLIGATED.

For the third consecutive year, BLAC has partnered with Mesa College to develop the next generation of Black leaders through identity development, leadership, and career readiness.

This year’s cohort was exceptional. Emerging leaders who embraced the responsibility to become confident, capable, and committed to advancing themselves, their careers, and their communities. Leaders prepared to change the conditions and the odds for those who come next.

Two powerful sessions. One clear mission: become the leaders who change the odds.

We look forward to seeing their leadership felt across campus, throughout their careers, and across their communities.

Lift as you climb. It’s on us.

BLAC rising leaders!

Shoutout to Adrian Rupley, a rising photographer in San Diego using his lens to tell stories that matter. 📸

Through his work with BLAC, Adrian is capturing more than moments, he’s documenting the transformation, leadership, and excellence of the next generation of leaders of color.

Keep building. Keep creating. Keep telling our stories. 🖤

The odds are against us. We need leaders committed to changing the odds, not just beating them.

Our founder, TJ Harris, will deliver the keynote address at UC San Diego’s Black Resource Center, exploring how identity, skills, opportunity, ownership, and collective responsibility build the agency and self-determination needed to make success the standard, not the exception.

“The marathon continues.” It’s our turn, together.

We’re not just developing leaders. We’re shifting power within communities.

BLAC equips leaders in historically underserved communities with the identity, skills, opportunity, and agency to advance themselves, their careers, and the communities they call home.

One leader at a time—thinking sharper, speaking stronger, leading further.

BLAC is an obligation.
BLAC is a choice.
BLAC is a way of life.

It’s on us.
