My son turns 21 years old today! It’s been quite the journey. Everything he does...everything he is...everything he’s “about” makes me proud and gives me hope for our future! He’s honorable, honest, motivated and clear headed. His internal nature is peaceful and he looks for the good in everybody and everything. The generation we see coming of age right now simply doesn’t countenance bullshit or artifice. They’re happy to call out hypocrisy. They endeavor to go out of their way to allow each and all the space they need to express their deepest selves to the world...no hang ups and no judgments!

When your child is born you’re thrown into a permanent state of anxiety. Am I doing enough? Am I paying attention to what’s going on in his life? Am I giving enough of myself to give him the sense that he’s got a forever champion no matter what?

In the end I may never have the answers to those questions...BUT...I can see who he is right now. I know where his efforts reside and what his heart protects. It’s all good and my pride in who he has become gives me peace.
From the day he was born until the day he turned one year old I wrote haiku daily. I documented what was happening in his life, the country and the world. I condensed hundreds of haiku into 365 haiku. I turned those haiku into a book documenting the first year of Ellis’ life day by day: Ellis’ Haiku Year.

If you’re interested follow the link and check it out.
My boy is 21 today and perhaps we’ll enjoy a shared beer today...a shared beer 21 years in the making.

My mom passed on September 3rd, 2025.

This is the first Mother’s Day my sister and I are experiencing without her in our world.

Poignantly missing the privilege (duty? Requirement?) of calling her to wish her a happy Mother’s Day. 😢 by @blaine.bowman

Today, Dec 14, 2025, is your first birthday having journeyed beyond, mom.

We no longer see the twinkle in your eyes when you make a snarky, sarcastic comment. You’re not here to gloat over us after beating us at a game of rummy. No more adventurous car rides. No more hearing you belt out Linda Ronstadt at the top of your lungs. No more stories about this great-great grandfather or that great uncle to laugh about. No more trips to Disneyland so you can buy more Mickey Mouse themed items.

Just the memories. And pictures. And extensive genealogy records you amassed. And quilts that you left behind. And the lingering sense of the love you gave us as well as the ever present sense of loss.

Today, Dec 14, 2025, is your first birthday having journeyed beyond, mom...and we miss you.

Happy birthday, mom. taken in Riverside, California by @blaine.bowman

Delayed post: Saturday, November 8th I rode the @tourdefoothills . This event has been a burr in my side as something always happened to derail my goals and/or expectations.

My goal has always been to complete the 30 mile course in under 2 hours (secretly) aiming for a time closer to 1:45:00.

On November 8th, 2025 the stars aligned and I rode the course in 1:48:00!! 17mph average…gorgeous weather…shared the roads with scores of enthusiastic and talented athletes!

A good day all around.

20 days until the UCI Anti-Cancer challenge.

Please checkout my portal on the website and please consider a modest donation towards this critical issue. We’ve almost all been crushed by the inexorable weight of the horror of cancer. Hopefully we, together, we can make a difference.

A little less suffering would be good, right?

It’s taken a few days to get to this:

Last Wednesday on September 3rd my mom slipped peacefully from our world. My sister, @66paiges_ , was by her side and holding her hand. I was four hours away and will be forever grateful that my sister made sure my mom wasn’t alone at one of the most intimate moments we experience. I will be forever grateful.

My mom was born Dorothea Linda Sherman in Hilo, Hawai’i on December 14th, 1943. She married her high school sweetheart (our father) and latter remarried the man that she would spend 40+ years with until he passed in 2022.

She had 81 1/2 years orbiting our sun living life and spreading her love and creativity. She was easy to talk to; had a ready laugh; loved music in all of its forms! My musical spark came from my mom! Although she was NOT a musician she supported my endeavors completely.

Mom, I will miss you even when I don’t realize that I’m missing you. I love you.

Today is my third 1st birthday:

Dec 8th, 1964 (my original 1st birthday 👶🏻)

Oct 15, 1998 (one year after my first open heart surgery ❤️‍🩹)

Today, July 16 (one year after my second open heart surgery ❤️‍🩹)

This last year has been a journey and I’m grateful to all who have there with me AND been there to push me further down the road to recovery!

Grateful to family (first and foremost...my biggest fans!), the medical staff at ucihealth, my teammates and friends @alliancecycling and the patchwork quilt of cycling components companies that I rely on for my riding recovery/mental health:

When we can my oldest friend (Grego) and I get together and bond. We hang out. Share what's going on in life. Eat something. Drink something (Not "something" actually...but beer). And we make music. Music is the oldest thing apart from simple brotherhood bonding us forever. His mom was my "other" mom. She potty trained me alongside him and his family was mine. We've been in bands together...spent uncountable hours together pondering, analyzing and playing music together. We're informed by life having lived through so much together. When we make music we make it on our terms. We put ourselves into it in a true collaboration of bonding. We come first. Our enjoyment. Our joy. Our goal is always..create and simply exist in the moment. What comes out is who/what we are: musicians making music for no other reason that it's our way of bonding and enjoying each other. Until next time, Grego... #Beatles #IveGotAFeeling #Ukulele #AcousticGuitar #Aklot #Takamine by @blaine.bowman

April 6th, 2025. 264 days post mitral valve replacement open heart surgery. A day I realized one of my post operative goals. I rode the San Diego Medio Fondo 60 mile ride. Post surgery my immediate goal was to, well it was to be alive. After that I was assessing my health with the goal of riding long events and, perhaps, find a way to channel my energies into some form of charitable contributions.

April 6th, 2025. 264 days post mitral valve replacement open heart surgery. I spent months riding longer and longer distances...increasing my intensity along the way. I spent months assessing equipment and planning.

April 6th, 2025. 264 days post mitral valve replacement open heart surgery. On the day I showed up ready to ride. 264 days encapsulated in a single ride. Yes, I know that’s not what it’s all about...but the goal, the event was important. I felt ready...but anxious. It was here...time to prove to myself that I was back.

April 6th, 2025. 264 days post mitral valve replacement open heart surgery. My first goal was to beat 4 hours. My second, don’t say it out loud, goal was to finish in 3 1/2 hours. I finished in 3 hours and forty one minutes. I’m happy with that if not a little surprised. BUT...next year I will beat 3 1/2 hours. I promise.

Credit where credit is due. My equipment made a difference...I know it did. The bits and pieces that made the whole thing easier:

@Landsharkbicycles (custom frame and fork) @ffwdwheels_usa (wheel set) @Campagnolosrl (group set) @iamspecialized (saddle) @Vittoriatires (tires) @kavhelmets (custom helmet) @sidisport_official (shoes) @elielcycling (clothing) @skratchlabs (nutrition...very important!) @ritcheylogic (handle bars) @tifosioptics (glasses) @garmin (pedals and head unit).
