This year, I’ve realized how much I've felt the weight of constantly having to explain myself. I accept that being in a rock band as a Black artist means existing in a diaspora, but the pressure to justify our duality—being both high-energy and deeply intimate—has been overwhelming. It often feels like there’s an expectation to pick a lane or be less. At the start of the year, I sought advice from someone I trust. She told me, “I’m not telling you what to be, I’m telling you to be it.” That hit like lightning. She reminded me that artists like Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain, and Prince transcended genres—they were, at their core, singer-songwriters. King Youngblood will always be raw, powerful, and unapologetic live, but at the heart of our music is one guiding principle: serve the song. Every track starts with just a voice and a guitar—stripped down, essential, and true. If a song can stand in its purest form, it can scale to any level and still resonate. With the world on fire, authenticity matters more than ever. For our 2025 @nprmusic Tiny Desk contest entry, we’re returning to that truth—no frills, just the song. This is the origin version of "cameron’s journal."

Ever since I ruptured my Achilles I haven’t been able to wrestle with my son and if you have boys then you know how much this is a huge part of father/son bonding. This has been the hardest part of this injury; having to tell him “sorry I can’t wrestle for a long time buddy”. The look on his face crushes me. Well my physical therapist clears me to walk so that means it’s time to bust this kid up! I’m still wearing the boot and taking it easy but it’s time to body slam this kid, he’s been missing it and I can honestly say I’ve missed it even more.
