Experience my piece “Liminal Ubraxis” up close.

This work continues an ongoing thread in my practice where I strip things back and test what remains. I have an innate tendency to build and layer, so here I am practicing restraint — removing colour and reducing detail so structure carries the weight.

The composition is guided by a sequential logic, where each proportion grows from the one before it. I’m interested in the quiet rhythm that emerges when growth follows order.

Additional forms are lifted from the surface, introducing depth without adding noise. Their placement isn’t arbitrary — it reinforces the underlying order of the composition.

The Mandarin Tree is delighted to welcome Auckland based artist Blake Beckford to the gallery.

Working primarily with acrylic spray paint on cast acrylic, Blake creates intricate abstract geometric works that explore sequence, pattern and progression.

His practice is grounded in systems based thinking, with each element carefully considered to inform the next. Handcut designs intersect with lasercut forms, while colour, spacing, layering and depth combine to create works that shift and evolve with light and perspective.

Blake’s visual language is also shaped by a lifelong fascination with science fiction and fantasy, particularly the imagined worlds, intricate systems and visual complexity found within them. The result is a compelling balance of mathematical structure and imaginative intuition, creating forms and visual experiences that feel both precise and entirely new.

“I’ve always been drawn to speculative fiction and systems-based thinking, particularly worlds built around layered rules, progression, and interconnected structures.”

We’re thrilled to have two of Blake’s works now in our current collection.

Another in my frameless series!
This series is built with a hidden component for hanging behind it, which raises the piece off the wall, creating a floating effect with beautiful natural shadow play!
