Bruce Dickinson, Patron of the Blake Cottage Trust, recently visited Felpham and was deeply moved to cross the threshold of the house where William and Catherine Blake lived between 1800 and 1803, a period of intense creativity, visionary experiences, and work of all kinds, inspired by the sea air and the green fields of the English countryside.

Watch the video produced by BBC Sussex, capturing this special moment in the history of the Blake Cottage Trust.

We are just one year away from the bicentenary of William Blake’s death. Help us celebrate his legacy and join our crowdfunding campaign to open the cottage in time for this significant anniversary. To donate, please visit the link in The Blake Cottage Trust bio. Every penny counts.

The Blake Cottage celebrates Allen Ginsberg's centennial with a Magical Mystery Tour! A wonderful group composed of Ginsberg's friends, collaborators and admirers visited the cottage, following the steps of Ginsberg himself, who was there 1979. Back then, he knocked on the cottage door and was happily welcomed by the residents. Musicians Thurston Moore, Steven Taylor and Gina Birch joined us in the visit. And so did Barry Miles, Ginsberg's biographer and lifelong friend.

In 2027 we celebrate the bicentennial of Blake's death and The Blake Cottage Trust is working strenuously hard to open the cottage to the public and celebrate Blake's life and legacy. Help us to make it happen. The Blake Cottage Crowfunding campaign has just been launched and every contribution makes a difference. Visit the link in bio or the cottage's website to learn more.

The Blake Cottage Trust
Design a Garden Competition

Over 200 children aged 9-11 from five local primary schools entered our design a garden competition.

After studying the opening to Blake’s ‘Auguries of Innocence’ children came up with their own rhyming couplets inspired by the natural world.

In our workshop they learnt about Blake’s love of nature and the our work towards opening the cottage for future generations to enjoy. We left them with the challenge of entering our garden design competition.

After careful deliberation our working group for the vision of the cottage chose three winners:🥇Wren Waller, 🥈Bella Abdo and 🥉Pippa Asker.

Overall the judges thought the finalist’s images were imaginative and inspiring. One judge particularly commended that those chosen for first and second place were both “evocative and made links to Blake’s relationship with nature.” They felt the couplet ‘Bloom where you are planted, this garden is enchanted’ was “a lovely sentiment and captures something of the magic and mystical energy of nature”. Another judge said of the third placed entry that it was “a wonderfully vibrant space inviting exploration and making the often forgotten insect world, through a bug hotel, part of the essence of the garden”.

Our many thanks to our trustee Suzannah Lloyd and to her students who submitted their drawings reimagining Blake’s garden. Let’s rebuild it together!

🌟FULL OF FAIRY ELVES🌟

Fairy and Supernatural Belief in the Eighteenth-Century

On Monday 12th October, 7.30pm UK time, I will be hosting an event for @blakesociety. I've invited Dr Simon Young, folklore historian, to talk to us about fairy and folkloric belief in Blake's time. Blake's work absolutely teems with fairy and spirit creatures of all kinds. I wanted Simon, as a scholar from a different discipline, to talk to us and help us understand the context within which Blake was working.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME! You don't need to be a member of the Society to join in - it is free and open it all. Nor will you need to prove any knowledge of Blake. A little curiosity is all you need. We welcome curious folk.

"Between 1800 and 1803 William and his wife Catherine, (1762-1831), lived in a small mid 18th century agricultural labourers cottage in Felpham, Sussex. Now owned by the Blake Cottage Trust, (Charity number: 1160716), the property is currently undergoing repair, in preparation for its public opening in 2027, the 200th anniversary of Blake's death.

This tour, led by Nick Tyson from The Regency Town House in Brighton, provides the opportunity to see repairs underway and to learn a little of the couple's seaside home, in which Blake is reputed to have penned the words to the UK's unofficial national anthem 'Jerusalem'."

The Blake Cottage participated in the Heritage Open Days on 15th September 2026.
Led by Nick Tyson from The Regency Town House in Brighton, it offered the public a unique opportunity to see repairs underway and to learn a little of the couple’s seaside home, in which Blake is reputed to have been inspired to write the UK’s unofficial national anthem ‘Jerusalem’.

Nick, an experienced historic building analyst and prominent figure in heritage conservation, has been working with the Trust to help restore and conserve it.

Our big thanks to Nick and to all those who made it happen!

The event held on 12 September at The Blake Cottage, with master carpenter Joe Thompson, was a great success. Those who attended had the opportunity to learn more about the efforts of The Blake Cottage Trust to carefully restore the cottage’s timber structure and install a new thatched roof, as it would have been in Blake’s time. The aim is to recreate the distinctive “roof of rusted gold” that Blake was so fond of.

Our many thanks to Joe Thompson everyone involved in organising the event!
