HOLY FUCKING SHIT. WE DID IT.
LA NOCHE LLEVA ESPUELAS. We went back to Juárez to do something insane: make an ambitious feature with an incredible Mexican cast and a crew mostly from both sides of our border. Our hometown. Our movie. And lawwwd did Juárez make us EARN IT. Historic rains, chaos, sleepless nights, near-disasters. We laughed, fought, screamed, adapted. Occasionally the monster came out of me. Mi dispiace! But we NEVER stopped. I wanted to prove the border has the talent, vision and fucking balls to make world-class cinema. And we DID. Our cast, now family, led by Horacio García Rojas, with Ishbel Bautista, Aarón Alonso, Jorge A. Jiménez, Hoze Meléndez, Joshua Okamoto, Perla de la Rosa, Tulio Villavicencio, Guillermo Alonso, Hansel Ramirez, Raúl Adalid, Daniel Lozano and so many more talented actors from Juaritos, gave it EVERYTHING. Special love to my wife Violeta Vaz, co-producer, my rock, my emotional backbone AND a badass in the trenches, putting out fires alongside my very own Mr. Wolf, the amazing Toño Meza. Couldn't have done it without you. Daniel Gómez, my DP, producing partner and brother: thanks for rolling with the punches (especially from my crazy ass) and having my back even when you had no fucking clue where I was coming from. BRO, WE DID IT! Aarón Alonso, our first ally on the border, partner and carnal: I always knew you had something unique. Goddamn did you prove it on screen! Our local production team, led by Rafa Hernandez, Adan and Majo: you put everything into this madness. You were in the trenches with us. THANK YOU. And EVERYONE in front of and behind that camera: you left a piece of yourselves in this film. I'll never forget it. I'm editing now and can say it: WE FUCKING HAVE A MOVIE. Something special. One that'll change how people see border talent. Was it easy? FUCK NO.
Would I do it again? I used to say, “Ask me after editing.” Now? FUCKIN A RIGHT I WOULD! AND I WILL.
Am I proud? YOU HAVE NO FUCKING IDEA. We went to war. Took some hits. Lost a few along the way.
BUT WE CAME BACK WITH THE MOVIE. LA NOCHE LLEVA ESPUELAS.
